Very troubling, very sad. Let's face it, football is a rough game at the best of times. It's important for coaches to err on the side of caution in cases such as this one.
Here's a question. If you are a coach and one of your players, especially one who has done well in the past, says that something is wrong with him and feels he should play right now, why would you NOT listen to the kid?
If you are the coach, and in your opinion a player has sustained an injury or is sick, you don't let him play even if he begs you. But if the kid himself says he can't play, why the hell would you even want him to play?
