It is always interesting to see former baseball players play another sport after either there career is over or shortened....Jose Perez of course was in the Yankee organization and many other players have switched sports....I was somewhat surprised that former Hall of Famer, Ty Cobb plays for the Tigers...Hey sorry, not a lot going on this evening....Let's see if he gets some playing time against us on Friday....(LTB found he is great grandson so I changed post)

Something tells me that we are dealing with a different Ty Cobb here, since the "Georgia Peach" died in 1961. Of course, this may be a case of reincarnation. ;D
I suspect that the Oxy Ty Cobb is a bit more likable than old Tyrus, who was reputed to be one of the least likable of all baseball players.
(Heaven help the Tigers. They have no one taller than 6-6! Ouch!)

Ha. What a trip. There must be a story behind the name. Heck, dude might even be related to the Georgia Peach.
Just in case, our guys better be careful going up for boards. Cobb is liable to undercut you and then for good measure, spit some 'baccy in your eye as you lie on your back writhing in pain.

Wow. Dude is Ty Cobb's great grandson. Check it out. His father is Herschel Cobb of Atherton/Menlo Park in the Bay Area. His mother is Lyn Jason Cobb. They're both in the real estate business, though Herschel is also involved in Ty Cobb memorabilia and licensing. www.tyrusrcobb.com/html/biography.htmllynjasoncobb.com/?target_url=http://lynjasoncobb.com/RealtorWebPagewww.almanacnews.com/news/show_story.php?id=6279For a game as bland as this one, someone needs to alert the U-T. It doesn't appear anyone has done a story on this. What a great sidebar to the game. Also, Cobb was fabulously wealthy for the time. Though players didn't make much back then -- even superstars -- Cobb was a shrewd investor and was one of the largest shareholders of Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, as well as GE. His fortune exceeded $100m. Here's his Atherton, Calif., connection from Wikipedia: In the winter of 1930, Cobb moved into a Spanish ranch estate on Spencer Lane in the millionaire's community of Atherton outside San Francisco, California. At that same time, his wife Charlie filed the first of several divorce suits;[74] however, she withdrew that suit shortly thereafter.[75] Charlie finally divorced Cobb in 1947,[76] after 39 years of marriage, the last few of which she lived in nearby Menlo Park. The couple had three sons and two daughters: Tyrus Raymond, Jr., Shirley Marion, Herschel Roswell, James Howell, and Beverly.

It'd be cool if T. Gwynn and Strasburg were at the game. That's be a great photo op. Gwynn loves baseball history.

hope he doesn't spike our guys and drop n-bombs Wow! Do you think he plays is a Hood? It's a reference to Cobb and his playing style. Cobb was an avowed racist from the Deep South and made few bones about it. He was also a very aggressive, dirty player -- and made few bones about it. Some Wikipedia quotes: Cobb's legacy as an athlete has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament and aggressive playing style,[17] which was described by the Detroit Free Press as "daring to the point of dementia."[18] During Cobb's career, he was involved in numerous fights, both on and off the field, and several profanity-laced shouting matches. For example, Cobb and umpire Billy Evans arranged to settle their in-game differences through fisticuffs, to be conducted under the grandstand after the game. Members of both teams were spectators, and broke up the scuffle after Cobb had knocked Evans down, pinned him, and began choking him. Cobb once slapped a black elevator operator for being "uppity." When a black night watchman intervened, Cobb pulled out a knife and stabbed him. The matter was later settled out of court.[18] "Sure, I fought," said an unrepentant Cobb in a revealing quote. "I had to fight all my life just to survive. They were all against me. Tried every dirty trick to cut me down, but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch."

Ty Cobb / T. Gwynn connections:
Also in 1922, Cobb tied a batting record set by Wee Willie Keeler, with four five-hit games in a season. This has since been matched by Stan Musial, Tony Gwynn and Ichiro Suzuki.
From 1993 to 1997, Gwynn hit .350 or better, becoming only the fourth player in history to top the .350 mark in five consecutive seasons, a feat previously accomplished by only Ty Cobb (11 straight .350 seasons), Rogers Hornsby (six) and Al Simmons (five). His career-high average came during the 1994 campaign when he hit .394, the highest average in the National League since 1930.
Gwynn won a record-tying eight league batting titles (1984, 1987-89, 1994-97), joining Honus Wagner as one of only two players in National League history to accomplish that feat. The only major leaguer to win more is Ty Cobb, who earned 12 titles in the American League. Gwynn and Cobb share the distinction of being the only players to string together two separate streaks of three or more consecutive batting titles, with Tony earning three in a row from 1987-89, then collecting four straight from 1994-97. He is the only player in major league history to win four batting titles in two separate decades.

Interesting that poster says "Oxy sucks"...Did you attend a rival school?? I can't understand how an elite school like this would be hated....I admit I know very little about it...I don't imagine it is even close to having the academics of the Clairemont schools does it?? Is it on the scale of a Redlands, or my alma mater of Pacific? Just learned the Presbyterian's founded the school as so many of the elite private schools....LaVerne by the Church of Brethren, Redlands by the Baptists, and Pacific by the Methodists....We all are aware of the Catholic schools but not so much about the small ones...Great traditions and always nice to see the campus when in their respective cities.
