Butler can't shoot. Boyd is an upgrade over Butler. For I guy who can't shoot he broke the scoring record at his high school held by Reggie Miller. The same Reggie Miller who was a great score in the NBA. But I'm sure you guys know everything right?

It's funny to me that we are a program that is good almost exclusively because defensive talent is incredibly underrated and we as a fan base still somehow manage to underrate good defense. We once went to a national championship game because Butler would take away the other team's best guard, Keshad would take away the best wing and Mensah would limit any good low-post guys. Matt Bradley and Darrion Trammell were super inconsistent on that run and we still made the national championship. It's only a little bit hyperbolic to say that Lamont Butler is to defense what Jimmer was to offense. Neither is really an NBA talent due to their flaws, but both are incredible NCAA talents. Lamont catches way too many strays for a dude that is probably a top 20 Aztec basketball player in the history of the program. I'm excited about Boyd and BJ too, but I'm not sure what that has to do with Lamont Butler. That's a good point, but I do think, if we have Butler instead of Boyd vs Gonzaga, we lose by more, maybe a lot more. I would love to have Butler still as an Aztec, but we are very fortunate to have Boyd. Of course, the season is very young, who knows what they will both look like as the season progresses. EDIT: I agree, Butler can score, but I don't think he is currently an elite scorer.

Butler can't shoot. Boyd is an upgrade over Butler. Agree with that. Butler will have a few nice games for UK but will also have a bunch of bad shooting games. He’s wildly inconsistent on offense but he’s defense will keep him in the rotation. I'm glad he hit the biggest shot of his career and in Aztec history. That shot was perfect.

I couldn't be more impressed with BJ, I didn't dream he'd be this good. Especially so quickly. Plus his demeanor and maturity on and off the court are already like an upperclassman. He's the real deal. He and Boyd can be a heckuva backcourt duo. With McKinney as a spark plug off the bench and hopefully Reese hitting the court in good form when he returns, we have a tremendous group of players in the backcourt. Likely the strength of the team The good news is the old adage "college basketball is a guard-centric game". It is guard-centric, however: A good guard paired with a physically dominant big can be a wrecking ball in the pick and roll. We had that experience all the time last year with LeDee, and we've dealt with that so far against Gonzaga, and next is Creighton and their center who put up 49 points in a game recently. This is where you hope Heide would shine. But based on early returns, it doesn't look like it. Maybe he'll find his path soon. Now Compton could be a beast in the PNR.

Butler is not an elite scorer at the college level, not even close. He’s a career 41% shooter from the field and 67% from the line.
