The closed-door scrimmage between the two teams was scheduled for today.
Anyone have a report from up north?
I was at practice at the JAM yesterday, and I'm as high on Gwath as ever. Dude has nimble footwork, great touch around the rim and a silky smooth shooting form from outside.
Byrd, Heide and Davis looked solid.
Compton looked solid, but not quite as big as Saunders nor as athletic as Johnson.
Nick Boyd looked nowhere near ready for the season to start. He was in a boot up to his ankle and rolling around with his knee up on a scooter. I'm no doctor, but he appears to be at least a month, maybe two away from playing. Ugh. But who knows? Maybe just a precaution, but I doubt it.

Saw on twitter where someone said BJ Davis scored 28 points.

Lots of TOs. But we were down 3 guards. Could BJ start?

Wow. I'll be honest, I was a doomer coming into this season thinking that the Aztecs were about to drop off hard after the exodus of players over the offseason, but this is certainly encouraging.
BJ Davis scoring 28 points on 6-7 from 3PT? I'm definitely tempering my expectations but it would be big for the team if he had a LeDee-esque improvement this season.

Wow, I feel like BJ Davis has been somewhat of a letdown so far, would be huge to have him regularly contribute like that. Perhaps he just needed a little more confidence?
Seems like it could have been somewhat of a blowout without so many turnovers? Defense seemed solid based on stats, held UCLA to 34.5% FG%.

THAT is a surprisingly, and season-ticket boosting, and WHOLLY encouraging outcome. (Sorry for the Oxford commas, Azson.)

They were missing their big time center but were fully healthy otherwise. We were down our best player, another starter and the backup PG. This result should instill a lot of confidence in our guys.

Anyone know why Reese-Waters didn't play?

But..... hard for Davis to have been any type of a letdown as he had two 5th (6th?) year guards in front of him and didn't get much playing time. He might just be ready to step up and demand some serious playing time

Looks like UCLA was able to take advantage of the "Scrimmage" much better with getting more players solid minutes, SDSU was limited by injuries and played their starters more minutes then would have liked it appears for a "practice game"
This team could surprise some people this year, if they stay healthy.
Lets go Aztec!

Miles Heide 4-5 FTs is also a good sign!

The Bruins got 17 steals. If it was due to bad passing on our part then I could understand since they're not a cohesive unit yet. However if it was for bad ball handling then that has to be addressed.

That, combined with 3 guards out, probably led to a bunch of TOs.

Anyone know why Reese-Waters didn't play? Dutcher said he’s been dealing with a foot issue on the radio yesterday, but should be good to go for the opener.
