Aztecs and Washington State have a long standing connection going back to the beginnings of Aztec Football. CE Peterson (Oregon State grad) was not a football guy – track was his sport so as football coach he was fortunate to have a solid assistant coach to guide the early years of the program
T.A Durham, our 1st Assistant Coach (1922-23-24)
Thomas Arthur Durham (1891-1973) was the quarterback of the 1915 Washington State team that provided their only Rose Bowl victory in 1916. He kicked the two PAT’s in the 14-0 win over Brown.
Was a lieutenant in the Navy in the 1920’s when he served as CE Peterson’s key assistant and the real X’s and O’s behind the early success of the teams. Joined the Navy in 1917 - retired in 1947 as a Commodore. After the Navy he lived in Pacific Beach, died Oct. 25, 1973 at Scripps.
Walter Herreid – Head Coach (1930-34)
Hired to replace CE Peterson, he was 1st Team (Tackle) on the AP PCC All-League team in 1916 – THE FIRST honors squad for what is now the Pac 12. Started on the famous 1915 Washington state team.
Coached HS ball before the Aztec job. d. 11 Nov 1941 in Los Angeles, California, USA. Veterans Hospital Pneumonia per AP report ( Nov 13, 1941 Spokane Daily Chronicle, page 16)
