I'm edging that direction myself. I'm fighting to keep my passion for college sports in general and Aztec sports in particular. It may just be a matter of time before I lose that fight. I've got over 60 years invested in the Aztecs. It's been my #1 interest outside of family all that time. It will be a very sad day for me if/when I lose that battle. I came across the broadcast of a Harvard football game a week or so ago. It was Harvard vs. Cornell. I only had a few minutes to watch but found it very refreshing. Here were kids of somewhat limited ability who were playing not for scholarships or NIL or to get ahead by moving through the portal. It wasn't about program budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It was fun to watch. There was a purity to it all.I understand. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if we moved to D2 or even D3 instead of hiring professionals who just happened to go to college at the same time. The way it's working now, NIL and the transfer portal are hurting the game, IMO.

We have all done things for the money on our lives. Why bash a kid for doing what you all did? I wish hm the best of luck and if he did want to come back, I'd welcome him. Yeah, but...

If memory serves me right, Saunders left SDSU at the last moment. Left Dutch little time to try and find someone to replace him in the portal because most transfer players were already picked up. State doesn't need a power forward body taking threes all the time and not getting in the mix for rebounds. Exactly. I'll take Compton in a heartbeat over him. For Compton, it comes down to how quickly he grasps the defense. He definitely has the physical body and skills to play significant minutes this year for us.

Why do it less than a month before the season starts, though? Either do it over the summer or wait for the end of this season. Terrible for the kids on that team, really screws them over. I even feel slightly bad for Elijah If memory serves me right, Saunders left SDSU at the last moment. Left Dutch little time to try and find someone to replace him in the portal because most transfer players were already picked up. State doesn't need a power forward body taking threes all the time and not getting in the mix for rebounds. Well the replacement Gwath is a taller skilled player that takes threes.

Of course if it wanted to, Harvard could NIL all of the Ohio States and Alabamas right into the ground with its $53.2 Billion in endowment. They might be "purists" in athletics but they're old school capitalists in every other way. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yup, he left w/ no prior notice 48 hours before the deadline. Very douchebag thing to do. Just because it was a good move for him doesn't mean I have to give him a pass for it. Oh and remember he said it wasn't for the money...only to find out that it was... He also said competition wasn’t the issue either and boasted that he was better Gwath and Compton. I bet Gwath blows Saunders ass out of the water this year.

I do recall reading an Aztec article last year when LeDee said during practice he couldn't move Gwath from under the basket despite his skinny build. Just think, Gwath put on some weight since. I'm anxious to see his play.

And Saunders shot 18% and 32% from 3 the last two years. We're not losing much. Gwath should easily be able to top those 3-point numbers.

I have no ill will towards Saunders, hope he and his young family do well. With that said I am glad he has moved on. It used to drive me crazy that in games when we could not seem to get a rebound Saunders with his big frame would sit outside the 3 point line waiting for a pass rather than go inside and mix it up, he appeared really soft for his size. Maybe thats unfair and in our system thats what he was supposed to do but to an untrained eye (mine) it just looked like he didn't like the contact.

I don't know Saunders, but it appears by all accounts he is an honorable man who is taking care of his family. As fans we have high expectations and pay attention to what happens between the lines. Leading to a lot of back and forth this and that on Aztec Mesa. At this point Saunders has moved on, wish him well and perhaps it will be addition by subtraction. In my case am really looking forward to the the 24-25 team and believe it will far exceed the preseason prognostications.
Go Aztecs

I see where Saunders led UVA with 19 pts yesterday as they got pounded by VCU in a scrimmage. Would love to know how many rebounds he got.

That didn’t tell the coaches he was transferring till the last min. That screwed over SDSU program getting a transfer. He move on for money. Good luck at Virginia.

Kind of crazy that the primary reason for Saunders going to Virginia is basically why the coach wants to quit.
