Hehehe. Good lesson for the young people that the grass isn’t always greener. Saunders is learning that lesson the hard way. Is he? I imagine he’s still happy with the NIL money

I imagine he’s still happy with the NIL money Who knows if it all comes through. We saw from UNLV that there’s no guarantees with this stuff. I also assume he wants to play pro somewhere and being on team that could turn into a dumpster fire isn’t exactly advancing that goal.

Looks like Bennett is most likely retiring for the same reason Jay Wright and Nick Saban retired, all the transfers and NIL$. You have to re-invent your roster every year. Until some rules are made about all of that, I think you may see others retire early too. Why do it less than a month before the season starts, though? Either do it over the summer or wait for the end of this season. Terrible for the kids on that team, really screws them over. I even feel slightly bad for Elijah If memory serves me right, Saunders left SDSU at the last moment. Left Dutch little time to try and find someone to replace him in the portal because most transfer players were already picked up. State doesn't need a power forward body taking threes all the time and not getting in the mix for rebounds.

Good for Bennett. Tired of this nonsense that is college athletics. Can easily go get a broadcasting job or just step away and enjoy life and if college athletics ever figures things out and roster stability comes back into play he can get a job the next day.

We have all done things for the money on our lives. Why bash a kid for doing what you all did? I wish hm the best of luck and if he did want to come back, I'd welcome him.

While I agree that we've all made decisions that maybe were not the best or fairest, I'm fine without him. I thought he wasted that physique and body by continually shooting mostly threes. He never showed a nose for the ball, ever.

People are pissed cause he literally waited until a day or two before the deadline (with no previous indications he was thinking of leaving), basically leaving us with no one to replace him since it was so late in the process. It was just selfish on his part.

Until some rules are made about all of that, I think you may see others retire early too. You called it. Here's a quote from his announcement today.
"A lot changed between the national championship Virginia won and Bennett's retirement this week, namely surrounding what Bennett termed as the move towards a more "professional model" in college basketball.
"The game, and college athletics, is not in a healthy spot," he said. "It's not. And there needs to be change."
A link to an article about today's announcement:
I wonder how many college sports fans will make the same decision in the next few years is nothing is done?

Basketball transfer Portal will now be 30 days rather then 45- again that is Entering the Portal - in addition the NLI has been pretty much eliminated so very likely still very difficult for coaches to plan their rosters
As Dutcher has said with the NIL money he understands that players entering their last year of being able to play( Keshad - Butler ...) in college might choose the big NIL money but players with more then 1 year to play similar to Saunders are the ones that bother him especially when they make a late decision to enter the Portal . But that is the system that has been created .
Yes it would have been convenient to have Saunders but it sure seems that SDSU with Compton and MG have two very competent players that need to play .
Compton was voted by the Media as the probable best freshman in the MW . But Dutcher has also said that MG with the red shirt season with SDSU could be the better player - can't hurt being 7 feet tall and having a year to know the system on both offense and defense . Also an article in the UT today Friday that Taj has been the most consistent Freshman on the squad
So maybe Saunders will get his money and SDSU has the PT available for Compton , MG and Taj to get some PT

I have no problems with players getting paid but with no controls and such it creates an even more unlevel playing field and makes it almost impossible to have team roster continuity from year to year. I have very low enthusiasm right now for college sports and the mess the NCAA created with inaction.

I'm fighting to keep my passion for college sports in general and Aztec sports in particular. It may just be a matter of time before I lose that fight. I've got over 60 years invested in the Aztecs. It's been my #1 interest outside of family all that time. It will be a very sad day for me if/when I lose that battle.

It was Harvard vs. Cornell. I only had a few minutes to watch but found it very refreshing. Here were kids of somewhat limited ability who were playing not for scholarships or NIL or to get ahead by moving through the portal. It wasn't about program budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It was fun to watch. There was a purity to it all.

Yup, he left w/ no prior notice 48 hours before the deadline. Very douchebag thing to do. Just because it was a good move for him doesn't mean I have to give him a pass for it. Oh and remember he said it wasn't for the money...only to find out that it was...
