Even if he'd be free to transfer somewhere immediately the fall semester has already started. Also how many schools would have a scholarship available. Of course it the NIL deal at the new school is good enough the scholarship wouldn't be a problem. I'd say it's too close to the start of the 24-25 season for anyone on the team to transfer.
Some assistant coach is about to get a promotion most likely.

I think SDSU actually has a free scholarship. Or am I thinking of last year's scholly numbers? But you are correct, not likely to transfer after school has started. Besides, he only went there for the payday anyway, and I assume he'll still be getting what they promised. (I say that with a wink)

Without checking I'm not sure if he's still got one available or not. As much as I liked Saunders when he was here, I'm not in favor of letting a player come back after they've left for the money.
I'm sure the paycheck will be in the mail regardless who the new coach is. Assuming the NIL promised was actually going to be delivered.

As much as we'd love to have him back, it was NIL why he left and it's NIL why he's very likely to stay. No doubt Bennett timed this so an assistant can step in without any coaching searches or transfers.

I really liked who he seemed to be as a person although I didn't love to watch their games. They were ACC versions of the Aztecs with their great defenses and poor shooting. He always did very well during the regular season. In the last 6 trips to March Madness he did win a National Championship which is not nothing.
But in the other 5 trips he went out really early. The year before the Nat Champs, he was the first #1 seed to ever lose to a #16. The last three years he lost in the first round all three years, twice as a #4 seed and once as a #10. Hope it's an emotional reason and not a family or health reason.

Colonel Saunders left too much chicken in the bucket last season. He's moved on, I've moved on.

Hehehe. Good lesson for the young people that the grass isn’t always greener. Saunders is learning that lesson the hard way.

I like Saunders and wish him the best, but I also think Pharoah Compton is an upgrade. We need more of a true power forwarded whereas Saunders liked to linger outside the 3 point line too much.

I think we have learned pretty recently from UNLV that NIL isn’t guaranteed until it hits your bank account.

Anybody know how many of these transfers actually got picked up, and how many are sitting home today?

Looks like Bennett is most likely retiring for the same reason Jay Wright and Nick Saban retired, all the transfers and NIL$. You have to re-invent your roster every year. Until some rules are made about all of that, I think you may see others retire early too.

totally agree that Compton and MG will be able to play as well if not better then Saunders - so win win for both schools- SDSU has some very good talents and Saunders got his money

When the team needs a muscular 6'10 PF to get outrebounded by guards Dutch will beg for Saunders to return

Either do it over the summer or wait for the end of this season. Terrible for the kids on that team, really screws them over. I even feel slightly bad for Elijah

But I think Bennett retired now so the school will be forced into promoting one of his assistant over an outside hire. This has happened before for this reason.
