College hoops season tips off on the Mesa in less than a month.
Action starts on Oct. 20 in a closed-door scrimmage at UCLA, followed by an exhibition vs. CSU San Marcos on Oct. 30, followed by the first official game vs. UCSD at Viejas on Nov. 6.
Few people seem to know what to make of the '24/'25 edition of the Aztecs, but I would bet my entire horde of bitcoin, if, in fact I ever were dumb enough to buy into that Ponzi scheme, that they'll finish higher than the 6th place the pundits have them currently slotted in the MWC,
My uneducated guess at this point for the Starting Five is as follows:
PG: Nick Boyd SG: Reese Waters SF: Miles Byrd PF: Pharaoh Compton C: Magoon Gwath
Regular Rotation: Miles Heide Taj DeGourville BJ Davis Wayne McKinney Jared Coleman-Jones

Nick Boyd won't be available until San Marcos at the earliest. Does the USD transfer Wayne McKinney make the rotation ? According to Zeigler, Boyd had the boot off and was running the stairs at Viejas. He'll be ready. I haven't seen much of McKinney, but it seems the drop-off in talent/experience between he and Boyd is significant.

A horde is a group people, and a cache is an amount of goods n valuables would that be a more appropriate term? Bitcoin isn't legal tender, not here anyway, so what would be the proper term for your small fortune? If you were dumb enough to partake?

Ok, I'll play PG: Nick Boyd SG: Reese Waters SF: Miles Byrd PF: Jared Coleman-Jones C: Miles Heide 10-deep rotation:BJ Davis Wayne McKinney Taj DeGourville Pharaoh Compton Magoon Gwath Basically a whole 2nd team that could have a winning record in conference games if they were the starters...

I haven't seen much of McKinney, but it seems the drop-off in talent/experience between he and Boyd is significant. Last year's numbers: McKinney. 13.5 ppg. 41% from the field, 34% from three. 3 assists and 2 turnovers per game. 1.3 steals per game. Second team all WCC. Boyd: 9.3 ppg, 40% from the field, 34% from three. 1.8 assists and 1 turnover per game. .9 steals per game. No post season honors.

Yes! Now we're cooking with oil! I knew it wasn't/seem right/correct, but didn't know why? Thanks!

Depends on "which Butler" we're talking about. If it's the one who shot 12% from 3-pt and 33% from the free throw line... with the perennial head-scratchers with ball-handling under pressure... then I am not so sure the loss is that great. And I honestly do really like Butler, but he definitely regressed in some areas last season. I know my numbers are made up and a little too low in %s, but they aren't toooo far off, sadly. (edit: I know Butler will probably have a couple games at Kentucky where he absolutely takes over in the final 2 mins and wins games with heavy SportsCenter coverage... as that was the brilliant side of him here, which might have followed him having a pretty poor previous 38 mins... incl. blowing an 8-point lead with 4 mins to go with missed 3s and turnovers)

Butler is like Keshad - talented defender, flawed shooter, fringe NBA roster. Good but replaceable.

We're getting close. Unfortunately it's reported guys are a little banged up right now. Most serious was Nick Boyd's ankle, it's said he's still a week or so away from full contact. I think we see him in limited mins the first couple of games. Going to be a good chance to see how BJ Davis looks. My best guess at starters for the beginning of the season -
PG: Wayne McKinney SG: Reese Waters SF: Miles Byrd PF: Pharaoh Compton C: Jared Coleman-Jones
Regular Rotation: Nick Boyd BJ Davis Miles Heide Magoon Gwath Taj DeGourville
I could see Boyd and Magoon at some point getting into the starting lineup, but as always it's about who finishes. This is going to be a different type of Aztec team with only about half the rotation guys playing consistent minutes in college games. A lot of talent and potential, maybe a few head scratching (or pounding) moments. Reese and JCJ are going to have to be all conference players and Byrd on the MW defensive team would go well to have us finishing top of the conference and in a good spot for the tourney.

When healthy I’d guess the starting 5 is Boyd Waters Byrd Gwath JCJ
Regular rotation guys (not in order): Compton Taj Mckinney Heide Davis
However by conference time it’ll be a 9 man rotation

The rotation begins to shrink towards the end of conference play. So for the projected starters who worked out like LeDee did during the offseason, it'll pay off if we make the NCAA playoffs. Hopefully Reese took note.

I like what hoobs says, not only for size but also experience on a young team. Dutcher is a lot like Fisher so experience goes a long ways. I also think Heidi might be a pleasant surprise since there is often large gains from your freshman to sophomore year. As for Compton, seems legit and in-game action. But it was also very revealing when Dutcher was saying he needs to get up to speed with how they run the defense.
