Interesting you can evaluate Lewis on his first 4 games. Yes, a first-year HC, with huge turnover should be afforded some tolerance or slack. BUT, he has made serious blunders in play-calling, time management and an appearance of "giving up" at times, plus other defects which many here have revealed. And ALL of these flaws are inexcusable in my view, and worse, should have been discovered and discussed thoroughly during the hiring process, or were and Wicker chose to ignore them. Or are we too believe that Lewis, JUST NOW, at SDSU, picked up these bad traits? I appreciate your position. Can you point out some of these "serious blunders" he has made.

I've said on here and I'll say again - I think O'Neil has looked pretty damn good. I think he's our best looking passer since Adam Hall. Our receivers (drops), O-line (penalties), and piss poor play calling at times have been what has killed us.
O'Neil is a freshman and he's done a great job so far. We have had some real head scratching play calls - trying to get too cute with reverses and trick plays in the red zone, not running the ball when we should, running sideways instead of up the field when we have 3rd and short, etc.
O'Neil has not been the problem
BTW I don't think Lewis is bad. I think a lot of his play calls are good. But he's had some very questionable moments. And it only takes a one or two bad plays to ruin a drive and cost us a game
Bottom line is that it's a rebuilding year anyway. We have a true freshman at QB, so you can't expect us to have a big year. But I like that we're starting a true freshman because I think it'll set us up well for the next few years. With the transfer portal we might not get the chance to rebuild over time though

I appreciate your position. Can you point out some of these "serious blunders" he has made. Others have already done that and I don't have time to re-read all these posts. It's okay if you don't think "blunders" exist. I know blunders exist. John Harbaugh calling 2 timeouts in a row (which is illegal) costing his team 5 yards and keeping an opponents drive alive in an NFL Sunday Night game is a bluder. And this is from one of the best coaches in the NFL. But, I don't believe punting from your own 30, down 21, with 2 1/2 minutes left in a game that you have not scored a single point is a blunder. Many coaches have made the same decision. I don't agree with the call, but I wouldn't call it a blunder. Running the ball 3 times to make the other team use their timeouts so you can kick a FG to up 5 is not a blunder. If he had thrown the ball 3 times and each pass was incomplete, he would have left the other team 2 plus minutes and all their timeouts. If go down and score a TD, Lewis would have been criticized for that. Time Management, don't remember any instances. Being critical of coaches is part of being a fan. But to say these "serious blunders" are "inexcusable" and shows he will not be successful is silly. Saying Wicker should have discovered all this during the hiring process is silly as well. Just my opinion.

I wonder if the concept of rebuilding is even possible with the portal as it is.

A Coach, a coach, Aztec Nation for a coach. Or at least a coach who finally understands it all starts with a top quality quarterback. His two Predeceessors sure as hell didnt.

I wonder if the concept of rebuilding is even possible with the portal as it is. Just gotta get players to fit your system Good coaches adapt their system to the players they have for the season, and not force a system on the players. In the off-season they can recruit more players to fit their system. So far this year there have been too many times it looks like a square peg in a round hole out there.

O'Neil is fine. He's getting better and can actually complete a deep ball unlike every Aztec QB1 since the Kentucky transfer. He's getting better at censing the pass rush. Did an amazing job when the DE had a clean run at him.
His stats would be better if his WRs didn't have concentration lapses on routine passes. And if his head coach didn't ignore the match up issues his TEs created in the first half by not targeting them the entire second half.
I thought Sean Lewis's offenses ran the QB. That would take the pressure off Marquez Cooper Lewis in the RPO since apparently Cooper Lewis is the only player allowed to rush the football in this offense.

Interesting you can evaluate Lewis on his first 4 games. Obviously, you can't in most cases. Chuck Long was an exception (it was starting to become clear that he was in over his head, as he just didn't get anything right, and wasn't a leader). So far, Lewis is getting some stuff right, and looks and sounds like a leader. He's just making mistakes that he shouldn't. Will he learn from them? I think he will. My gut feeling is still that he's going to end up turning this program around. But he does have to learn from his mistakes and stop making them. But 4 games in there's no way to know if he'll work out or not. I hope you're right, but I get the sense that he's purposely retooling the program with his "culture" despite the fact that there are probably some better options in our skill positions and defense. Obviously, he brought in transfer portal players who he can name as his starters. Ok fine, that's the deal that was made. But to sit guys at positions of need in the face of a 1-3 start with our only win over A&M Commerce is dumbfounding.

I'm not sure how you could watch the Central Michigan game and not think "wow, our true freshman quarterback is improving tremendously."
Development isn't always linear, so it's certainly not guaranteed that he's going to be our answer for 4 years, but it's always nice to see gradual improvement.

We have NEVER seen QB improvement over the prior 10 years of other HCs.

Does anyone think playing a true Freshman QB could impact our future recruiting for that position? Or motivate backup QBs to transfer out? Why would somebody want to come to SDSU as a QB to sit 3+ years (especially if they think Lewis likes to play his favorites)?

When people are saying this, they are referring to his preference to HIS recruits over the current players who were recruited by the previous staff.

I'm referencing Lewis' favorites, as being "the chosen one." The bigger question is if playing a true freshman QB may hurt recruiting - especially if they are not expected to leave early for the NFL, etc.

Hey Paul. In your article you write " Another question is if O’Neil has the physical tools to run Lewis’ offense" Is this something you have witnessed in games and practices or is it just a question. I would suspect Lewis would not recruit a player who did not have the tools to run his system. Also, he was pretty highly ranked recrit (I think Phil Steele had him #37 in the country). Anyway, thanks for the great in-depth coverage (as usual). You ask a great question… in the season opener he had runs of 28 and 11 yards, then he hurt his knee in the 1st quarter against OSU… he hasn’t been the same since…
