I wouldn't have conviction with believing in either side of this at this time. Seems like a lot of shadiness going on. Sluka spent 4 years at Holy Cross, I'm sure he's smart and understood the wave that was coming from this decision. Seems more plausible to me that he picked UNLV for more than just a $3k stipend, but who knows. I would be shocked if a Walter Payton finalist transferred for $3k… very unlikely To further that point, this was his profile when he was transferring last offseason (https://theportalreport.com/2024/01/11/top-qb-transfer-sets-official-visit-for-this-weekend/): "Sluka is the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year after posting monster numbers with the Crusaders. Last year, the 6-foot-3 signal caller threw for 1,723 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions. The past two seasons, Sluka’s rushing numbers increased dramatically as well. In 2022, with 203 carries, he rushed for 1,234 yards and 11 touchdowns, while in 2023, with 186 carries, he rushed for 1,243 yards and nine touchdowns. After entering the portal, Sluka heard from a long list of programs that included schools all over the Division One ranks." Even the Las Vegas Sun's article says it: lasvegassun.com/news/2024/jan/16/unlv-football-lands-coveted-qb-transfer-after-wild/"UNLV capped a wild — and massively productive — week of recruiting with a commitment from one of the most sought-after quarterbacks on the transfer market, sending expectations even higher for the upcoming 2024 campaign" UNLV fans are lying if they think he expected to go there as a grad transfer for the opportunity to beat out their other transfer QB from Campbell U. Stop it. He clearly had demand and demand gets you paid in NIL. I don't want to hear about verbal vs. paper contracts. They tried to skip steps as a program and acquire talent they shouldn't have been able to acquire and it's blowing up in their face. I'd like to think we'd be embarrassed of the program if Lewis & staff pulled this kinda move.

Sounds like NPac dodges its first dumpster fire by THAT MUCH! Absolutely. Maybe this thing somehow blows over. And maybe the same situation happens tomorrow at Boise or CSU...or here. But for the moment it sure looks like a lucky break that the new Pac didn't invite UNLV. Either that or someone at the Pac knew something.

Promises, promises… I'm all through with Promises, promises now …
I don't know how … I got the nerve … to walk out!
If I shout, remember … I feel free
Now I can look at myself … and be proud …
I'm laughing out loud…
C'ya later, Sluka!

UNLV just released this statement: “Football player Matthew Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the university and its NIL collective in order to continue playing,” The statement read. “UNLV athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law. UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats. UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka. UNLV has conducted its due diligence and will continue to operate its programs within the framework of NCAA rules and regulations, as well as Nevada state laws.” www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/unlv-s-firm-message-on-matthew-sluka-s-financial-demands/ar-AA1rcUOw?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=53fc4a0efc694178bdf19681ebf7b2fc&ei=82

This is all so messy. Feels like stuff like this is gonna turbo charge the path to players becoming employees. They really are anyway.

Are they claiming that they thought he would go to UNLV for that and nothing more? Are they claiming they knew nothing about any NIL promises to the guy? Really? They must feel very highly of their university and football program. Perhaps the starting QBs for Georgia or Texas would like to transfer to UNLV for a minor stipend?

UNLV is 3-0 and ranked #24, but his QB stats have not been all that impressive. 43% completion rate, a little over 100 yards per game passing, etc. Sounds more like a game manager than a QB. Like Chapman when he was here. Oldie Out

Looks like UNLV will be just fine without Sluka as QB. They just smoked Fresno State 59-14. Hajj-Mailk Williams got the start and went 13-16 with 3 TDs and no interceptions. He also rushed for 119 yards on 12 carries with a TD.
