I feel like the kids requesting red shirts are planning on leaving and want to keep a full year or eligibility to take with them. What is the benefit of doing that over just saying you are transferring now?

I would think that, since they can't transfer now, use your redshirt year, you stay on scholarship, concentrate on school, collect NIL(if you can), get your film together and start sending out feelers....

Yes take advantage of still being on the team, developing your skills and having access to resources. Like having your cake and eating it too.

Per UT KENNEY today:
San Diego State offensive lineman Dean Abdullah has left the team, diminishing the depth along an O-line beset by injuries this season.
Abdullah, a senior from Antelope, which is 15 miles north of Sacramento, was a backup at both guard and center. He played in four games this season, the maximum number allowed to still preserve a redshirt season.
Abdullah played in the season’s first two games against Texas A&M-Commerce and Oregon State, totaling 16 snaps at guard. He subbed for starting center Brayden Bryant the past two weeks against Hawaii and Wyoming, totaling 50 snaps, when Bryant aggravated a sprained right ankle injury.
By leaving now, Abdullah can enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens in December and have one more year of eligibility remaining. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Abdullah is the third player to leave the program in recent weeks. Sophomore wide receiver Baylin Brooks and senior defensive back Bennett Walker departed in mid-September.
Abdullah spent the past two-plus seasons at SDSU, playing in all 12 games last season with seven starts, after transferring from American River College following his freshman year.

I keep crossing my fingers that LUCKY doesn't also leave, Redshirt, but it would probably be best for his college career.

I keep crossing my fingers that LUCKY doesn't also leave, Redshirt, but it would probably be best for his college career. Are players deciding to transfer because they are NOT Coach Lewis' guys? We can't afford to lose any OL, imagine if we kept both Simmons and Crenshaw-Dixon? This entire CFP landscape puts SDSU as a AAA farm club to the P4s, we can develop guys and then after a year or two they are off for money and fame.

Or Cade Bennett who went to TCU and was named San Diego State's Best Offensive Lineman in 2023, did not allow a sack and only six quarterback pressures in 367 passing attempts on the season. Yet, there were many who said the OL $UCKED last year (there was a lot of penalties by a certain player).

I keep crossing my fingers that LUCKY doesn't also leave, Redshirt, but it would probably be best for his college career. Sutton is already redshirt Sophomore, this is his 3rd year with the team. In other words, this season will just burn a year of eligibility while coach plays Cooper for 100% of the carries. I don't know what's going to happen if/when Christon is ready to play - I think his options are even more limited. Perhaps a medical redshirt?

Bennett was the one that really hurt, he was the anchor of the line and was just a prototypical interior lineman and would have been exactly what this current line is missing. Last years O-line was not that good and the staff did VERY little to help them.

OTOH Mike Schmidt knows how to develop linemen, but it takes time. I think the issue is if Lewis' plays are too complex for these linemen then it makes Schmidts' job that much tougher. We can't expect the same linemen to mature and stick around because of NIL. Perhaps Lewis will simplify his offense for that very reason. He'll have to adapt.

the key for the Aztec Offense is the OL
while Lewis may have wanted an Aztec Fast style - with the number of injuries to the OL and their abilities it sure seems the offense is a lot more basic then Lewis was hoping for .
do not think the offense is that complex but it does mean the team needs a quality OL

A few more HS stud OL recruits might help for the upcoming seasons. For now, just use what we have left in the depth chart.
Our recruiting staff will need rebuild the OL room a bit. Some of our biggest and best linemen from recent years were local San Diego kids.
Oldie Out

Current OL is decimated. Lewis has his work cut out for him the reset of the season, not to mention in the transfer portal.

It's more like long season Single A or Double A ball at best.
