This email went out to students today (interesting that they said CSU Fresno instead of Fresno State):
Dear SDSU students, faculty and staff,
We are pleased to share that San Diego State University has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference. The Aztecs will officially become a member of the Pac-12 on July 1, 2026. We are joining league stalwarts Oregon State University and Washington State University, along with Boise State University, Colorado State University and California State University, Fresno as the newest members of the league.
Our time is now. SDSU Athletics – our student-athletes, coaches and staff – contributes to our institutional identity and regional community, promotes student engagement and a sense of community, supports the educational and professional development of our students and generates significant new revenue. And for many in our community – such as our next generation of prospective students – athletics is often the first, early introduction to our great institution.
We are poised for the next level, the top-tier of nationwide competition and performance. This move benefits all corners of our institution. We will be able to recruit even more competitive students and talent and undoubtedly entertain new projects, partnerships and financial advancements to support our entire university community. We will enjoy these benefits while also enhancing the overall student experience, and gaining even more national and international visibility for the positive impact of our students, staff and our faculty.
As a founding member of the Mountain West Conference, we hold tremendous appreciation for the conference and our partner institutions. The Mountain West Conference is where we have seen some of our most notable successes in program history, and where we look forward to competing on the national stage through the 2025-26 season.
Importantly, no state funds will cover expenditures related to this move. Today’s announcement is the very first step in our next phase, and we will keep you informed of our plans. We appreciate the Pac-12 Conference for seeing the significant value in SDSU and the broad impact of our students, coaches and the broader community, and are looking forward to this exciting, new era. Go Aztecs!
Adela de la Torre, Ph.D. San Diego State University President
J.D. Wicker Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

It's an upgrade and a step in the right direction, but this is NOT the Pac 12 we've been wanting to join all these years. That conference no longer exists. This is essentially the MWC rebranding their name. This conference won't be treated as a power conference.

This is essentially the MWC rebranding their name. This conference won't be treated as a power conference. I predict the next major realignment will happen before 2030. I'm thinking 2028 as schools come to grips with travel and what it is doing to their student athletes. I do think the PAC will have provisions that would be less difficult for teams to leave if a P4 conference calls. The way the MWC is, they probably would instill a $100M exit fee on SDSU if they could get away with it. As my sage father used to say, "f x x x them and the horse they rode in on."

This is essentially the MWC rebranding their name. This conference won't be treated as a power conference. I'm callingit PINO, PAC In Name Only. Not the OG PAC but still an improvement over the old MW. Perfect example of addition by subtraction. No more Boise Bonus, no more elevation trips to Wyoming, Air Force or Utah State ...
We interrupt this post for the following breaking news: The beet juice market in San Diego just collapsed due to the Aztec athletic teams no longer will be traveling to excessively high elevation teams to play every year. Film at 11:00. Now back to your regularly scheduled posts.
... we can go back to a shorter conference basketball schedule, the weaker teams will no longer drag down our strength of schedule during conference play. I'm hoping the TV contract will be more favorable as well.

Poster comment prior to posting the letter to students this morning: "This email went out to students today (interesting that they said CSU Fresno instead of Fresno State)"
That's because it is officially California State University, Fresno. Fresnecks insist on calling themselves Fresno State. However, with the exception of one, every CA State University campus is officially a CSU or a Cal Poly. SDSU is the only one whose official name does not begin with a CSU or CP designation. When we first earned university status in 1973, we were known as CSU, San Diego. That lasted one year when we petitioned to we become SDSU in 1974. My wife graduated in 1973 and is part of the only class in history to have a CSU, San Diego diploma.
