Mrach 23, 2025 is the 250th anniversary of the Patrick Henry speech at the 2nd Virginia Convention from March 23, 1775 including the phrase Give me liberty or give me death. There should be celebrations in every city that day.

I'll celebrate the day after Trump is defeated in election 2024. I will take democracy and the liberty it provides for all.

This idea of honoring the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry's speech of March 23, 1775 is celebrating American history and is not a Republican or Democrat concept. This would be just like celebrating the country's 200th birthday in 1976 that had nationwide support of all, non partisan and which the 250th country's birthday is July 4, 2026. Even the San Diego Padres had special game day programs for the 1976 season and made with the Patriotic colors. People over 60 years old will remember the 1976 200th Country's Birthday celebrations. I was 10-years old in 1976 when that happened. I attended Patrick Henry High School in the early 1980s so this has special meaning for me and anyone who attended that school.

Better get rid of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Johnson, and Grant, as they all owned slaves. I'm not justifying it at all--just pointing out the 12 Presidents that owned slaves.

Slavery was the worst aspect of American history without doubt. What is more important than the fact that slavery existed in this country is what has happened in the past century and a half to correct that wrong. Actually, what has happened in just the past 60 or so years along those lines is especially important.

AzWm Pretty sobering to think what was still going on in America until 1964 (not saying that fixed everything) ...but damn...in my lifetime!!

AzWm Oddly ironic, if you read the other thread... Influential Republicans believe Kamala Harris is ineligible to run because she's not a "naturally born citizen." Wonder why. They cited the Dred Scott decision. Lynching was still legal on a federal level until two years ago. Think about that. You could hang a Black person from a tree in early 2022 and it wasn't considered a federal crime. While I'm glad we no longer have segregated bathrooms, schools and public areas...we have a LONG way to go.
