A rather sedate crowd today, maybe 1,400. Honestly, I think if they had people sitting on the western side of the stadium, the experience would’ve been more enjoyable. Holy macular degeneration Batman, that sun was in our eyes the entire time! If they are trying to sell season tickets, perhaps the more comfortable west side would help the fan experience…..
Overall I was impressed with the size and speed of both lines, Marlem Lewis will one of the stars of this year’s defense…he was credited with at least 2 sacks and was in the backfield frequently.
Jelani Whitmore and Josh Hunter both contributed interceptions and the defense had some good moments on the goaline.
The offense looks like a spread which uses a lot of no huddle. There is some RPO mixed in as the offenseive line was able to open up some holes for Lucky Sutton and Jaylon Armstead both had long (40+) TD runs. Sutton especially had good vision, running through holes and getting into the secondary.
Keenan Criston left the scrimmage early with a leg injury.
In the QB battle, I was very impressed with Javance Tupou’ata-Johnson. He delivered some nice passes today including a 43 yard laser to Jerry McClure. Based on what I saw, if he can run the offense like the coaches want, he should start. He has good wheels to, as he showed some good speed scrambling. I was also impressed with Danny O’Neil and AJ Duffy. Duffy looked very accurate, while O’Neil seems to have great instincts in what to do with the football when on the run. I would rate the QB’s Johnson , Duffy, O’Neil, Crum.
The WRs looked impressive. Baylon Brooks was very frequently targeted.
No Marquez Cooper today. The tight ends didn’t get targeted much today.
Overall, this is a pretty talented Aztec team. They have a chance to have a very good season this year and will not be overwhelmed by anybody on their schedule. I am looking forward to the Sean Lewis regime.

It also seems like Coach Lewis is going to play a lot of guys in the 3 deep. The thinking being keeping the legs fresh for those 4th quarters on the road in altitude.

~ 8,000 tix given away, less than 2,000 attendees. Seems about new normal, but i remember a few pre-season scrimmages at Jack Murphy with some pretty solid crowds - the excess gear sale always attracted a crowd.

Is anyone going to talk about the lack of activities available for the fans at the “Fanfest” the Aztec store was open, some concessions were available and that was pretty much it. Kind of underwhelming.

I think they had some of the olympic sports there early for kids to play with but not clearly mark what was going on. They had 360* camera thing that recorded a video of you & we’re texting it to your phone. Again not really clear what was going on unless you asked. It’s the usual SDSU event where they do the bare minimum & wonder why people are dissatisfied. I didn’t see anyone from the alumni association or Aztec club, probably hiding in an air conditioned suite.

Did anybody see any kind of real advertising describing what was going to be going on at Fan Fest? Did it get you excited about going to the event? Not talking the hardcore fans on this site that were going no matter what but the causal fans that were undecided? Not saying they didn't promote the event but will say it appears they again did just another Well Below Average attempt at building any type of momentum leading into a New season with a New Coaching staff, a team that is almost 75% new and a 3rd year stadium that has NOT truly been given its proper grand opening*. *One-off onetime Party atmosphere, Bands, DJ's, Carnival rides for kids, SDSU giveaways, HUGE alumni section with activities (bigger then Aztec village) just do it up right think outside the box for once. This would mean hiring an outside firm

Well, I went to see a little football, check out the new players, see the new offensive and defensive schemes, along with spending a couple of hours with my son. So I was very happy. In addition, with my wife and my 59th wedding anniversary coming up soon this month I got a surprise early anniversary gift, 100 Years of Aztec Football book. Actually my wife was the one surprised when I got home from the scrimmage and told her about the gift she had bought me.

Kind of underwhelming. There was more than twice as much Wave gear than Aztec stuff?? Not sure why they call it the Aztec Shop?

And having everyone sitting in and facing the sun was asinine! As many people in the bar, as sitting in the sun.

I hope he gets a fair shake from the new staff with their new commits. n.rivals.com/content/athletes/javance-tupou-ata-johnson-273588?view=pvLewis needs to hit the ground running. I can't envision his Golden Boy running the offense as as true frosh.

If our o'line is good, we'll be very entertaining with the running backs we have, and the offense we run.

I bet he put a wrench in the new staff's plans to start their guys when he's been the best QB in both scrimmages often against the first team defense without the first team offense. From practice reports, he also has the strongest throwing arm too.

I remember telling myself that this kid could very well start someday, and he's the real deal. Hopefully, that comes true, or at least one of the players turns out to be the real deal.

I think several of us pointed to JTJ with the announcement of Coach Lewis thinking that he could absolutely be a star in this new offense. I'm totally putting for him!
