There's been some online chatter about the ruling on Hole 8 at the Wells Fargo, in the first round, when Xander's ball nearly went OB.
I think the confusion stems from misunderstanding the conditions under which differing rules would apply.
This was NOT a case of an unplayable lie.
His playing partner (Wyndham Clark) found the ball in the right bushes within the three minute time limit.
Also, you are permitted to move non-embedded rocks and stones even if you are within a penalty area.
Where Xander got REALLY LUCKY, was that there was a Shot-link antenna with guy-wires, that was directly in line between his ball and the hole.
In his post round interview, he told us he had a shot down the fence line toward the hole, but the antenna was in or on his line of play, along that right side.
I am no rules expert, but those fans who are upset with the ruling are under the impression that the antenna was a Rule 16 "abnormal course condition," (defined as 1. animal holes 2. Ground Under Repair 3. IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS, and 4. temporary (i.e. casual) water.
In pro tournaments, antennas, grandstands, scoreboards, etc. are TEMPORARY immovable obstructions (TIO's) and fall under a USGA MODEL LOCAL RULE F-23 which provides "Line of Sight" relief, rather than "Nearest Point" Relief.
Yes, the antenna was first, an abnormal course condition, however, Xander did not have to proceed under Rule 16 because while it was immovable, it was a unique form of abnormal course condition, an immovable obstruction that was merely TEMPORARY. Thus, the correct form of relief was under the Model Local Rule.
Hope this helps.

Every player would ask. If the rules official gave him the ruling I'm not sure what all the chirping is about. Certainly it doesn't come anywhere close to the huge rock 10 people moved for Tiger years ago. The idiots online need to move on. Xander just took advantage of the rules. Same as Kim did on 18 when his ball was against the collar for his put and since it was under lift clean and place rules he was able to put his hand on the ball and move it one club length to get off the collar. No one is complaining about that because he missed the putt for double bogey and practically shot himself out of the tournament. Xander is in first so let the crying begin from the couch potatoes twitter complaining about the rules again!

It's a bad omen to finish with a bogie.

It's a bad omen to finish with a bogie. It happened yesterday too. Didn’t hurt him today. Hopefully it won’t tomorrow either.

Leader by one at -12 after three rounds. Rory is breathing down his back just one shot back. Rory’s won 3 times there and considers it his favorite golf course. Hopefully Xander can hold it together for one more round.

Hope Xander is a Trophy-Guy today rather than just an ATM-Guy today. To the rest of us, his ATM ability sounds great but to a real competitor, it must be driving him crazy that he's so close SO many times without winning.
Go Aztecs!

Xander is @ -12, Rory is -11.
Xander is 7 shots ahead of 3rd place, Rory 6, after 5 holes today. Can't imagine anyone passes these two. Winner gets $3,600,000 with 2nd getting $2,160,000. Even without a trophy, that 2nd-place $ is pretty amazing.

Another ATM Sunday. Sorry but I just can't watch him any more. I love the kid and love how he has represented himself as an Aztec and especially as a person. But it's too painful to watch him on the weekends. He fell apart again today. Yes, Rory killed the back nine but Xander had ample chances before and during that to increase his lead and pull away. But he kept leaving birdie puts short until Rory tied and passed him and then Xander started choking putts too.
He has the most Top Ten finishes in the last two years on the entire tour. Has 46 consecutive made cuts which is 11 more than the next guy, Scheffler with 35. He has a zillion Top Ten finishes in Majors but the kid can't close. And please don't chastise me for not counting the Olympic Medal or how much money he's won or his 7 PGA Tour wins. Those are all great and if he hadn't been in a position to win so many other Tournaments, that alone would be a great career.
I love golf and because he's been at or near the top in so many tournaments, I see a ton of him on TV but that just makes it harder to watch his regular meltdowns. I really feel for him but he needs to get into a good Sports Psychologist and do it soon.

He is completely f@@@@d between his ears. I like Xander's abilities, but if he doesn't win any tournaments this year then he should consider signing with the LIV after the season, He can't seem to finish anymore. If he leaves the PGA then I'm pretty sure Patrick Cantley will join him as well. They'll be set for life.

Well that escalated quickly. He’s a chump I mean McElroy was -8 on an 8 hole stretch. Peak Tiger wasn’t beating him at that point. If anything Xander needed to play better yesterday to have a much bigger cushion going into today.

All he has to do is finish in the Top 10 which he is more more than capable of doing.

Xander drove the ball extremely well this week but had trouble scoring from 130 yards and closer.
If he drives the ball that well at the PGA next week he should be in contention.
