I think we are approaching a decision point for teams within the G5. Stay FBS and start paying players? Stay FBS but cut sports and pay players? Stay FBS and try status Quo? Drop to FCS and pay basketball players? etc. I would have thought that the current cost to run departments would have already forced universities to drop. I've said before that I enjoyed Aztec football and basketball as much, if not more, back in the days we were College Division in the 1960's. If that's what it takes to get back to actual student athletes who are playing for the love of the game I'm all in. I'd even go for dropping to D3. I did as well. I enjoyed playing teams like the Gauchos, the Call State LA Diablos, the dreaded Long Beach State 49ers, MCRD, North Dakota State and on and on as much as playing any of the teams we play now. And, of course, Fresno and San Jose State that we still play today. And I think that the crowds back then were just as passionate or more so than they are today. I would even say that a reasonable form of compensation for playing football and basketball would be ok but the current system is totally out of control and is ruining the nature of college sports.

It will be the official end of amateur sports in the USA. No organization will be able to enforce any amateur restrictions. What about individual conferences like the Ivy League. Could they agree that as a conference they will not participate in certain practices that they feel are destroying the amateur nature of sports. And, of course, only sign players that want to play under such a system? The settlement in the article hasn't been agreed to yet and in order for there to be no more court cases regarding this issue it seems that the NCAA, at least, wants Federal legislation to protect them in the future. Otherwise I don't see anyway for colleges to enforce any amateur restrictions.

I still hate Long Beach State.
I wasn't too uncomfortable with the $2,000 per month that Mesa was paying the basketball players. That seemed to be at least in the ballpark of what the average college student could earn while still carrying a full class load. Almost impossible for a student athlete to carry a full load, work and meet all their team obligations. I know at one time scholarship athletes were barred from working a job during the season. So, replacing that income might be acceptable. They are already getting tuition and tutoring.
If they want to be college students playing a sport while getting some financial assistance with their schooling then being an amateur student athlete is what they should be doing. If they want to be professional athletes while they attend college they should sign up with one of the professional leagues if they can.
While some talk about all the money colleges are raking in from athletics they seem to forget that any profits from football and basketball go to support all the non revenue sports. Very, very few (any?) athletic programs generate a profit over all their programs combined.

Excellent post on MWC Board by a Fresno poster, JohnJayJay.
"Nobody watches minor league sports. Thereās a reason why you donāt see 45k seat AAA ballparks. If I want to watch compensated professionals, I want to watch the best. The powers that be have confused why we watch college football: itās not because of professionalism and skill level, itās because of community, regional rivalries, feel good stories about local kids playing for local universities, being an alum, etc. Lose all that in pursuit of professionalism, de facto free agency, and the almighty dollar, and many of us will stop watching and switch over to the NFL if we need a football fix. Currently, I donāt watch much NFL ball, but I obsessively watch and follow my college team (Fresno St) and their conference mates in the MWC. Thatās about it. I could give a rip about about the B10, SEC, etc. If schools like Fresno St and other G5s get further marginalized into irrelevance by the networks and āP4ā presidents, Iāll simply stop watching college football. I wonāt suddenly develop an interest in an Iowa vs Northwestern game. I suspect many other G5 fans feel the same way. Thatās enough of a loss of viewers that would make these current multibillion dollar TV contracts the P4 currently enjoy potentially untenable and disastrous for the networks."

All SDSU needs to do is be the first University to get an affiliation/sponsor with an NFL team to become their minor league team. This will also be an end to the NFL draft.

Good. They've screwed everyone's pooch for years and years and years. And they've certainly screwed collegiate sports for the rest of us forever. There has to be some sort of regulatory body though, and it has to have the authority to enforce rules. An NCAA by any other name, you know

I believe this is one of the reasons we are seeing so many things thrown around and delays. I think when you take emotion and heart out of it, and use your brain they know it will not be sustainable.

The only emotions are greed. Greed for more money and more power. Greed has a way of blinding you to all reason.
