He averaged almost a foul a minute. He would foul out by the first half. Much like Billy Mumphrey, true freshmen bigs are an excitable lot. Some might say cockeyed optimists... with unbridled enthusiasm! Regarding the fouls, I like the aggression from an 18/19 y/o big man. It's much better than playing soft and/or timid. Remember, Dutch & Co. recruited Miles HARD. They must see something they like in him. Boutros Boutros-Ghali!

I'm a bit uncomfortable if Heide is a starter. His ability to score seems like a complete unknown. Am I wrong to worry a bit? You’re completely right about his offense but he was better than people realized in other areas. If his stats stretch out to 24 minutes a game he would have averaged to about 8 rebounds a game and almost 2 blocks. He actually had more offensive rebounds than defensive which should have resulted in more successful put backs than it did. He missed a lot of bunnies but he already knows how to do the hard part, getting the rebound. He's actually on par with how Mensah was on defense as a freshman too. So hopefully that trajectory continues. His next challenge is being reliable on offense

His next challenge is being reliable on offense He also needs to continue on with with conditioning, he needs that additional size and muscle to increase every year to be that force down low. This means working with a nutritionist and the strength coach, not over doing the lifting to soon but staying focused and working on his diet All Day Every Day, The Strength and Conditioning is a couple hours a day 4-6 days a week and but Nutrition and Recovery is 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Small Lineup: Butler, Parrish, Waters, Byrd, Gwath
Big Lineup: Butler, Parrish, Waters, Saunders, Gwath
Top Players by Minutes: Butler Parrish Waters Byrd Gwath Saunders
I think Gwath will be a key part of this team. He seems like a prototypical Fisher/Dutcher big in the mold of Mensah, Spencer, etc., but hopefully with similar defense and better offense.
I think the other X factor will be Byrd. If he can fix his funky shooting mechanics and improve his offense, he could be a dangerous player. He cut down on his mistakes significantly this season over last and need to cut them down even more. His mantra should be the old Wooden maxim: Be quick, but don't hurry. Byrd is always in a hurry.
The final X factor will be the outside shooting of Butler, Parrish and Waters. All three were relatively terrible compared to their previous seasons. All three need to boost their FT shooting (except Waters) and their 3-pt. shooting by at least 5+ points. If they're able to do that -- big if -- we'll be golden.

I don’t know who’s gotta take a back seat, transfer, what have you, but Miles Byrd needs to be in the starting line up. He’s too dynamic to Not be getting big minutes IMO, especially after a big summer hitting the weights. He’s arguably the most talented player on the roster, and we need to take advantage of his next two years, similar to Jalen McDaniles time here.
Lamont at the 1, Reese or Micah at the 2, Miles at the 3, Elijah at the 4, Heide/Gwath/transfer big at the 5 is my starting picture.

Byrd and everyone else needs learn/get better finishing at the basket. Not sure many teams missed 2 footers as us?

One thought on the above couple thoughts / lineups... I am pretty sure Parrish is much more of a 3 than a 2, so it would be a swap to Waters at SG and Parrish at SF.

realize that he will only be a true freshman but Compton at PF - think he has the physical frame to be quite valuable on the boards both rebounding and scoring close to the basket - might it be one of the easier transitions from HS to college at the 4 position .What Aztecs need is a consistent rebounder - a guy that wants to play close to the basket ?
not saying he is a starter but can contribute in areas that will be important
