I suspect this opinion piece is no coincidence. Recall a few weeks back when Carlos Gutierrez, i.e. "Monty", posted on Twitter about how the SDSU Administration (or the SDSU President??) called the authorities to try and prevent Carlos from showing up at a basketball game in his Monty Montezuma Gear? And now suddenly an SDSU journalism professor is given space in the Way-Left Union Tribune to rehash the mascot issue, and not surprisingly he calls for "literally anything" but the Aztec Warrior? I'd like to see the email/call logs between Adele de la Torre and the UT. There was no confirmation that SDSU Admin called the authorities and T&M security ended up letting Carlos in. But yes, feel free to continue to paint AdlT as the anti-Christ. |

Need to have a vote with the students and alumni voting for four or five. then have a runoff if a majority does not win the first time. Nominees should include Monty, Xolo, the Aztec Warrior, and two others. Catawampus would run away with it. |

I think this opinion from a SDSU Professor is both great and refreshing given that for years so many academics and admin folks (SDSU) have been against any mascots, athletics and the Aztec's name. I am certainly not in favor of the "Xolo's" but he makes some interesting points based on his prior schools that he attended. I am hopeful that the younger teachers/admin folks etc will be more supportive of our Aztec's!

A few things:
-Nobody knows what a xolo is….nor cares.
-The picture of the TJ Xolo mascot. Very disturbing, especially to children.
-We can do better than being named after a dog.
-Any “new” mascot is going to be offensive to someone else, so we might as well leave it alone.
-The University still needs donations from alumni. If they change the name, the checks will get sent to another worthy institution.
Why doesn’t USD have these sort of problems? Torero/Tostedo is offensive….no?

They knew what they were doing when they ran this. Flood them with AZTEC WARRIOR Letters to the Editor… Mutts or Warriors? WTF do you think?  As far as Carlos getting in, here he is at the Thursday game. The reason he was given by T&M "security" was "Dress Code Violation". JDW was on the inside watching. As I went in, I asked him what the issue was. He claimed ignorance, but what else was he going to say in front of a bunch of Aztec fans? Later on in the afternoon, Carlos was inside. Not sure who he was calling at that moment, but it wasn't tense or anything - just a WTF moment for most. I suspect many fans entering that day didn't even realize there was a problem with him getting into the arena. |

I've read very few of these mascot threads. I guess I just really can't deal with the issue. Monty Montezuma is some kind of problem but the jokish Sammy Spartan seems not to be. And the pugnacious leprechaun at Notre Dame is fine to represent Irish folks? The UNLV Rebels? What did Nevada ever rebel against? I guess I'm just too much of a liberal to understand all of this foppishness. If SDSU has a problem with an Aztec Warrior or with Monty (disgruntled or not) then I think that reflects badly on my old institution of higher learning. Class of '74.

Quetzalcoatl seems like a no-brainer to me, especially with "Dragon" already in the stadium name. Imagine the team taking the field out of a steaming mouth, a la the SJ Sharks, and flame breathing after FGs and TDs.

Muslims consider dogs to be "unclean" so that adds another minority group we would be offending. So just say "no" to "Xolo." Perhaps if we make the Aztec Warrior "trans" we could push him/her/he/she/they/them across the finish line. You just can't help yourself! I have to admit you do make me laugh. But then I cringe and roll my eyes because I know the mob is coming for you. 😂 No worries, I have a very active sense of humor and little filter anymore. Can you imagine George Carlin, Sam Kinison and others of their ilk surviving today? The thing about humor is that things are funnier when there is an element of truth to them. What I posted meets that criteria. So, put monty in a pink tutu, give him a headdress of pink vaginas, hand him a rainbow spear shaped like a dildo and have him ride onto the field/court on a multi-colored unicorn and we are golden. No one would dare say they are offended by that.  |

I am of Norman descent and the Minnesota football teams mocks my people with their mascot wearing a horned helmet. Vikings didn't wear such a thing. I guess I need to demand that they stop mocking my ancestors. We kicked ass and took names. |

I've posted that many times. An Aztec mascot is offensive? Fine, call us the Conquistadores since they kicked Montezuma and Aztec ass and then landed here to found our city. May as be named after the winning team. eh? |
