I really hope that they don’t completely rule out recruiting the south for DL.

Good article. And there have been a few posters on the board who have pointed out that we needed to recruit CA hard outside of sd. That is what Basketball did for years and still focuses on for HS recruits and then looks national for Transfers. They need to use the same formula.
The attitude of SD Football coaches towards State has been and continues to be one of elitism and complaints. They push their elite players to SC, Alabama, and other far reaching places (used to be UCLA but that stopped a while ago) and then bash State when they don't take a marginal DI player on their squad.
Honestly for me, I would be casual buyer in LA, OC and SD and go big in the IE, Bay, and Valley (including stockton).

I remember when Lewis first got hired he was blown away at the talent in So Cal alone with a remark about Mater Dei & Bosco being within close proximity of each other like he hit a gold mine.
Tons of 3 stars and 4 stars who might not have looked at SDSU before or on a bounce back if things don't work out.

One thing I can't get my mind around is the point where the diminishing returns makes casting a wider net foolish.

I saw M.Johnson’s recruits the OC on the Offensive side of the ball, but nothing was mentioned about who recruits the OC on the Defensive side. SCAL, SD, OC, Long Beach, IE, Corona, the Trinity League is the Gold Mine in California.

What do you mean by an either or? SD recruiting versus the rest of CA or are you asking about CA recruiting versus the rest of the West and other States? Inside CA I just think putting significant resources into recruiting into SD is largely a waste of resources. Everyone wants a fence except the coaches and the kids. We do better in LA and the OC than SD. Our best recruiting grounds are the Bay, IE, valley, and inner coastal. The programs mine LA and SD and don’t spend as much time in other parts of CA. JMO.

You have to try no? With the new offense kids will be more excited to come here. It’s hard to get a talented QB when they hand off 30 times a game. Aztecs always had solid RBs because they were the lifeblood of the offense for so many years. It’s going to shift towards skill players, downfield play makers. I really don’t see a downside

Look at any recruiting service & look at the top 250 players are in the country. There are way more in S. Cal than N.Cal. Who wins all the CIF HS football Champions, S.Cal. Why do you think the PAC12 & all the other conferences poach the HS’s in S.Cal. not N.Cal. Also everyone knows if you need a QB, go to SCal & you’ve got yourself a future Starting QB. The Trinity League alone put out more D1 players than any other league. The new SDSU coaching staff is doing the right thing.

I don’t remember saying that other parts of CA were better recruiting grounds. As you note it’s one of the best areas. But the proof is in the pudding. We recruit very poorly on SD. I wish it was different and it’s not just Football. Basketball talent does not stay home either. JMO.

I think it goes back to even the Air days, but that’s not my lane. I just don’t think investing a ton of recruiting time in SD makes sense. Maybe I’m wrong. It won’t be the first nor the last time.

I wasn't an athlete, but when I graduated high school I was happy to stay in town for college. However, many of my school mates wanted to get out of town as quickly as they could to get away from family or just to go somewhere different.

This is a message board it's all about opinions and yours is usually really good. In this instance, it is too. Here are my equally as fallible ideas. Whatever building the fence actually means, recent changes to the world make figuring out how to recruit SoCal very important for State. 1.Covid had a huge impact on young people and staying close to family for some is more important than it was prior. This is true in general. 2. NIL means there's fewer spots for high school players so in theory, that should have a trickle down to a place like SDSU that should be about development. 3. This is more theory but something to keep an eye on. Life for a CA kid in the Big 10, ACC, & Big XII won't be as good as it was in the Pac-12. Football circles are small and if those places develop a negative rep, SDSU needs to be an alternative. Additionally, weak local recruiting attempts are a wet blanket to building momentum and filling Snapdragon. IMO, they should be able to canvas California as well as any school in the nation and until they do, that should be their priority.

IMO, they should be able to canvas California as well as any school in the nation and until they do, that should be their priority. You are absolutely right that the recruiting game has changed. COVID did disrupt how we live our lives and the NIL with the Transfer portal has forever changed recruiting. I haven't given much thought to these impacts. I understand that there are a lot of people that still view how things clouded with the past. I absolutely agree that CA recruiting should be the focus, just don't lean into San Diego. However, you have me thinking. It is true that JUCO recruiting doesn't happen in the DI era very often anymore, they were first casualty of the transfer market. The JUCO's have lost out to the FCS squads. And I believe you are eluding to the fact that HS recruiting may be entering into phase where the numbers for those recruits will be diminished as well for FBS. As I sit here this am, I agree, and thus believe even more so that any sense of a fence with NIL and open transfers is fool's gold. The absolute beasts of DT's for UCLA were the twins from North Texas. We shall find out what percentage of HS recruits / Transfers will emerge, but I suspect for State it will lean more towards Transfers. State is near the top of the heap of the G5 for desirability for football and basketball. State's recruiting grounds may be shifting to the MAC, SBELT, CUSA, AAC, MW, and Low level power teams. It may make more sense to understand this map more than the HS recruiting.

The top HS players from SD County are going to continue to try to go to P5 schools as they have in the past
The transfer portal has also changed things dramatically - so even if SDSU gets a top recruit some after a year or two they will be approached by a P5 school
Then lets toss in NIL money another major change -
So coaches really have to be able to be able to use the Portal as well as they can
There will be a slight revision for guys that SDSU used to lose to WSU and OSU as they are now at the same level as SDSU
