AzWm I like to get to the stadium early and just absorb the pregame atmosphere. I do the same for theater. At the last home game I was sitting there thinking about the thread in which several posters were complaining about the stadium. I also started thinking about my dreams for Aztec Bowl back many years ago.
Back then I envisioned enclosing both ends and making Aztec Bowl a true bowl. Then we could either extend the side up at the same pitch, and/or add an upper deck like was done at Balboa Stadium to create a 40,000 or so seat, on campus, stadium.
I was on the Aztec Club Board of Directors back then (1970's) and was talking about this dream to some of the old timers (anyone over 40 was an old timer to me back then). I was told that there had been a study about doing that very thing. It was feasible to convert Aztec Bowl into a 40,000 seat stadium fairly easily. The problem was parking. At that time there were no parking garages on campus and, of course, no trolley. So, we were stuck with being a tenant in San Diego Stadium.
As I was thinking about al this at the last home game and looking around SnapDragon, I realized that what we have is very close to what I had envisioned for Aztec Bowl. The seating starts a little farther away from the sidelines than at Aztec Bowl and the pitch is not quite as steep, but reasonably close.
Short version ... I can't disagree with Depressed Ginger.

I drove by the Snap for the first time a few days ago while visiting San Diego. Looked pretty nice to me. Maybe someday we'll be able to get a reasonable number of people in it.

I hate the G5 P5 branding to my core. It' such a pin you down and eat $#!+ bully move from the media and other conferences.

I found the narrator hard to listen to, and he had to mix in too many cheap shots at the stadiums he was supposedly complimenting. Personally, I think it’s a great stadium at which to hang out but not a very good stadium to watch your home team: not enough affordable home side seats, bad acoustics, too much space on sidelines (maybe better for soccer someday when we’re forced to drop football), and too much catering to the elite donors at the expense of the old diehard season ticket holders.

I'm almost surprised he didn't recommend a roof for Snapdragon--he often does that for other stadiums he reviews, like Dodger Stadium, and Angel Stadium.

AzWmYes, he mentioned the fact that no canopies--similar to other MLS stadiums--were installed at Snapdragon. But this guy has stressed the need for some sort of retractable roof. For Dodger Stadium.

theathletic.com/5479782/2024/05/09/football-50-most-valuable-clubs-premier-league-mls/?source=user_shared_articleThe tipping point has occurred… MLS teams are shooting up the rankings for most valuable global football teams… “Which league has the most representatives in the top 50? The Premier League would be the obvious guess. But 20 clubs in Sportico’s list are from Major League Soccer (MLS) — just under 70 per cent of the entire league. Los Angeles FC ($1.15bn) are the highest-ranked MLS club at 15th, but Atlanta United, Inter Miami, LA Galaxy and New York City FC all make the top 20, too. While big-city sides from the North American league are towards the top of the list, smaller markets are also represented in a boon to MLS’ development — the likes of Austin FC (21st), Portland Timbers (30th), Columbus Crew (37th), FC Cincinnati (38th), and Nashville SC (40th).” “For one thing, the absence of relegation in the MLS model gives its teams a higher income floor — while the league’s cost-control measures, together with existing, modern stadiums, means they have the structure to one day maximise revenues. This year, season-ticket sales and revenue grew by 15 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.” The Aztecs partnership with FCSD will be huge over the next ten years

The beat goes on. Petco is in the top three ballparks visited by out of town fans.
East Coast fans, surveyed, plan their summer vacations around their teams visit to Petco. They love Petco and downtown. So, before we hear complaints about out of towners supporting their team at "the Dragon" remember...it's bankable!

It is a stadium that generates more income that it cost to build, and it was built recently.
I tell you, UCLA wishes they had what we have. They play in the Rose Bowl that, on a great day, they halfway fill (unless it is USC). They are stuck playing there through 2042. When they are established bottom feeders in the B1G, and that is a given, they will be lucky to draw 20K fans to their stadium, and most of those will be rooting for the other team.

Bingo! I've gone to Snapdragon with people who looked at the stadium objectively and not through rose colored glasses and they've all said the same thing...looks like a stadium built on a budget, caters to the Gucci crowd and not the average fan and my favorite, looks like a stadium built by IKEA. Went to games for 50 years, season ticket holder for 42 years and said "enough". I'll watch on TV. For me, watching them at Qualcomm was far more enjoyable and it's not even close.

That also might have been due to the teams you were watching. Hoke's teams were incredibly frustrating and boring to watch. I think (hope)this year's will be better.
