This year has been one of the biggest disasters in Padres history. They have one of the highest payrolls in the league, and and absolutely awful record for a team that was supposed to be a contender.
This may be one of the biggest underachieving teams in baseball history. Not the biggest, but one of the biggest.
The hitting coach has to go. Preller should be gone. He has yet to have one of these big splash years in free agency turn out well. Last year was an anomaly. And what about Bob Melvin? He hasn't brought anything to the table that has made this team better. He has done nothing to get this team turned around. He was hyped a lot coming in, but he's clearly just a guy. Not a bad manager, but not all that good, either.
Changes need to be made. This franchise has never won a World Series, and hasn't even been in one in a quarter century.
I bought into this team after last year's run and the free agent signings Preller made. Now it would seem all he did was pay a lot of money for guys who can't perform consistently and who don't gel as a team.
This season has been a massive cluster.

They’ve sucked pretty much all season long offensively. Wasted far too many well pitched games because their hitters went into strikeout mode watching our competent pitchers. No concept of team ball at the plate… plenty of solo homers, though.

You have the wrong anomaly. Care to elaborate? Should be pretty obvious. What's more likely from a pure statistical perspective: A team has all their players simultaneously not just underperform, but underperform at historic levels in a variety of specific situations? Players with extensive documented track records of success all at the same time fall off a metaphorical cliff? A team adds two players, one an MVP candidate and the other a bona fide star......and they get substantially worse? A team that's in the top ten of both position player WAR and pitching WAR and isn't even .500? Those are anomalous situations. The truth is much more complicated than the on-field product.

OR the coaching is so bad that these guys are ruined by the coaches involved. What's the common thread among all these guys UNDERperforming at the same time? They came to the Padres and had the same bad coaching! And Bob Melvin did an utterly mediocre job this year. Coaching matters. Managing matters. Creating a winning atmosphere and culture matters. We don't have good coaching, we don't have an above average manager, and we don't have a winning atmosphere or culture. That needs to change.

And was last year for real, or was that the anomaly? The Padres had one of the best offensive rosters in the entire league, but played like one of the worst. Did SIX guys really suddenly forget how to hit, or was the hitting coach giving them bad advice?

You believe that 6 players all individually suddenly went into the tank, despite the statistical improbability of that happening independently. I believe that the one common factor that they all had - the hitting coach - was more likely the problem. He couldn't get them right, and many of them actually got worse the longer they were here. Bogaerts got WORSE as the season went along and he got more coaching from our hitting coach.

Bogaerts has had a wrist injury all season, aggravated by getting drilled by a Spencer Strider fastball in mid-April.

Maybe the hitting coach didn't do his job in advising the manager that the hitter isn't able to contribute the way they need him to. And maybe the hitting coach just couldn't deal with the injury. And what about everyone else going into the tank at exactly the same time? Do you have any idea what the statisitical improbability of that happening is? It's REMOTE. UNLESS you factor in bad coaching.

I believe something that is historically very common. (Bad coaching ruining good players.)

And you're incorrect. You'll get no argument from me that I think Flaherty is a good "coordinator" but he's here because of Manny. A team statistically not having a single win in extra innings, or being one of the top ten worst teams in baseball history with runners in scoring position is an anomaly.

Terrible teams with bad rosters and questionable coaching walk into walkoffs. The Nationals had four in their last eight HOME games. Terrible iterations of the Padres, in fact, have gotten to double digit walkoffs. The Padres last season, with virtually the same staff: 12-5 in extra innings, 30-17 in one run games, 12-8 in walkoffs. Melvin didn't forget how to manage. He's one of the best managers in the game, but managerial impact is largely negligible pre-playoffs. The players bear a lot of the responsibilities. But they have been plagued by a mountainous amount of bad luck in batted ball performance, they've been crushed by key injuries and they've underperformed as a result.

You make endless excuses when it comes down to the management and coaching failing to fix ANYTHING this year. Utter and complete failure. They've gotten NOTHING right this year. Excuses won't cut it. And this organization will not sniff a World Series Championship as long as Melvin and whoever is really responsible for coaching the hitters is still on this staff. I mean who is it, really? No one has that job title, so is NO ONE responsible? Flaherty? Bernard? Coolbaugh? No one?? Actually, that seems to be an institutional problem with this organization. They have no real, "Hitting Coach," who is ONLY responsible for that. Bernard and Coolbaugh are, "Assistant," Hitting Coaches, and Flaherty doesn't have Hitting Coach in his title at all, so no one takes the full responsibility or blame in this organizational setup. They should ALL go. Bring in a top level hitting coach and a good assistant. Flaherty is a failure. So are Bernard and Coolbaugh. Keeping them will continue these problems. The hitters may share some of the blame, but a Hitting Coach's ONLY job is to improve performance, and these guys have utterly and completely failed in that respect and deserve to be fired.

Ball game could've been tied up, but Scroto, Manfred Manny, and Boogerts, just can't get the job done. They suck.
