Won't pitch for the rest of the season (and all of next.) Is a second TJ a given? What risk does a second TJ bring to his ability to hit? Because if he can still hit without surgery, is there a thought to not doing the surgery?

He had proven his point with the pitching. He should just focus on being the premier hitter in MLB and crush 500+ HR.

We couldn't have afforded him anyway. No, they could have. It's just a matter of time until he's a pure DH, unfortunately.

I'd hate to see him relegated to just being a hitter.
I wonder what he prefers doing - hitting or pitching? I wonder if he could make a full recovery if it would be feasible for him to remain a pitcher and then hit as a DH every other game that he doesn't pitch, just to lower the workload on him.
Probably a crazy idea, but it would be a shame to lose a special two way player and relegate him to one position or the other. There may be no choice on that, but it would be a shame.

Even before this happened, you rarely saw anyone in recent weeks including the Padres on any lists of teams that had a chance of signing Ohtani to a FA deal.

Since they won't sign him, you're right. It means nothing. They will definitely pursue him, for better or worse. He's only signing with a team out west, so the market isn't going to be all that robust.

He's cheaper now. Come on, AJ!!! Pass. It’s not like the Padres tore the cover off the ball this year. Machado, Tatis, Soto, Xander, Cronenworth, Grisham all hit below expectations….especially in late inning clutch situations. The Pads need something…..this current group of whiffers weren’t even competitive this year.

A guy who will be 30 next year, won't pitch until 2025 in all likelihood and will have to play the field at some point to justify the contract? Sure thing.
