Agree very difficult for a guy to turn down a Blue Blood school - where even being a good reserve can get you to MM and even NBA .
Back to the question of whether a player wants to go to a school where he may contribute to a good team . Or maybe want a better chance at starting or get a lot of PT
Every recruit is different .
By the way will BYU be in the Big 12 by 2023-24 season .

Some big time wing players hitting the transfer market in last 24 hours ... Scheierman is likely headed to a top 10 team but Matthews is likely a possibility for us (west coast kid, Tacoma WA) and I personally hope we get a 6'6- 6'7 'ish wing rather than a 6'2-6'3 combo guard.
Baylor Scheierman 6'6, the Summit League Player of the year (South Dakota) Averaged 16.2 points 7.8 rebounds 4.5 assis (47% 3P%) !!! Emmit Matthews Jr 6'7, Washington (prev played at West Virginia so he can defend) Averaged 11.7 points 4.7 rebounds

I like his game, but not sure he'd bring anything to the table we don't already have? I'd much rather have a combo who can shoot and fit into the starting lineup. That's not Mathews. The kid from Texas, Ramey, DEFINITELY! EDIT: I did see the (other) SDSU guy play a game and he's very good. Terrific shooter with a well rounded game. Ran point at times. But again, we'd be recruiting over CBM. It would allow us to start Trammell, Bradley & this kid which would be solid. Not sure on his D though?

Some recruits will even take a reserve role on a P6 team over playing for a Non P6 school

The Aztecs could really use another shooter. The last two NCAA appearances the Aztecs started ice cold vs Syracuse and couldn’t buy a bucket down the stretch vs Creighton. Good team shooting comes from multiple options, not one guy who eventually gets doubled and shut down.

Good team shooting comes from multiple options, not one guy who eventually gets doubled and shut down. The '21 team had multiple options and was one of the best 3-pt shooting teams in the entire country. Often it's just about matchups & the moment. In '22, if we make a stop, make 1 less turnover or 1 more FT we win as well, despite not being able to buy a bucket down the stretch. We were good enough to score over the 1st 38 minutes. But do agree 1 more is a necessity, which is what the coaching staff is obviously looking for. We already have more threats than last year from deep with Trammell, but 1 more would help no doubt.

I want a big guard who can shoot, we have enough wings with with big wing spans. I don't want another SF to take CBM's minutes.

Almost every team could use an additional scorer - and it is the transfer that gets to select the school they find best suits them
The better they are the more schools will be trying to get them - and if they are very good it usually means you get the P6 schools
The Aztec coaches are trying to land either a wing or guard -( not sure if they also are trying for a 5 or hear from Nathan ) but the competition is very solid - same as when you are recruiting HS recruits .
Unfortunately the Portal also favors P6 schools -
We can see or hear the list of schools that have contacted a transfer( usually the transfer will list them all- to show all the schools how valuable they are ) BUT then it is the transfer who decides where they want to go or maybe take a visit .
Is it May 1 that a player has to decide if they want to Enter the Portal but the Transfer can wait awhile to make a decision .
Many transfers want a P6 but also could see that a P6 is more likely to recruit over a transfer If they can get another player that is even better .
Not exactly an easy time for a NON P6 coach as they battle the P6 schools or even others
But that is where the coaches earn their money being able to out recruit the other coaches

Rudi Williams has reduced his schools and Aztecs still in the running Given those 4 only BYU & SDSU give him a realistic shot at the dance and with only 1 year to play not sure why he'd go to OSU or Wichita St unless he's solely looking for scoring opportunities. Also have to think he's a Plan B for us, with Lucas Plan A. Not sure where he lands on BYU's priority list? He may be waiting on other dominos to fall.

Believe May 1 is the last day a player can enter the Transfer Portal - so that caps the Transfer Portal . But as we have heard NBA evals go om until the first part of June
There have been numerous guys entering it lately .
Was interesting to see that Reeves was going to commit to Kentucky But then saw how Kentucky was still recruiting over him so has decided to hold off on his decision
The Shockers lost numerous players in the Portal so that begs the question Why - Yes there will be a lot of PT but would want to chat with those guys leaving what is going on there
BYU has also had a few guys enter the Portal - as they lost their top recruiting coach so again PT is going to be there and games against the Zags but as Coug mentioned what are their chances of MM . They have been doing a good recruiting job . If he was playing 2 years then getting to play in the Big 12 would also help them .
OSU is a P6 but is hard for them to get back to MM also .
Aztecs- if things work out- could be a good team next season . There is also a great Trip and T in Maui with a very strong group of teams that will be televised .
But every recruit has their own priorities of what is important for them - Sure transfers are on their phones talking to other players to get their opinions of a school and its coaches and players .

Technically the portal isn't "capped" on May 1st. It's just the last day for 1st time transfer undergrads to use the exemption. Grad transfers can still enter, and may, as well as those willing to sit. Guys who believe they'd have a strong case for a waiver could still enter as well. It'll slow down, no doubt, but there will be guys entering every week IMO. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that if Nate delays until May & decides to go pro somewhere, we replace him with a late entry grad transfer intrigued by the opportunity.

Aztecs not on the long or short list. Surprised this didnt exceed Twitter's character counter Scheierman has reduced his list to 10, and while we weren't on it there is a connection. Kentucky is going after him hard, already trying to recruit over Reeves. No surprise.

Unfortunately word has Antonio Reeves committing to Kentucky today. Bummer. Really liked his upside. Hopefully we can entice Lucas to commit - he's visiting WSU this weekend (his 3rd visit overall). Not sure if he's taking more, but he's said he won't decide until around May 10th or so. How can we compete with KY? They are providing their recruits with Porsches under the NIL arrangement. Any ex-aztecs own a Ferrari dealership? FYI -- Yes this happened early today.

St. Bonaventure senior Dominick Welch is entering the transfer portal. Welch, a 6’5” 205 lb guard started all 33 games for the Bonnies, and averaged 12.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Impressive shooter from 3, has also declared fro the NBA darft. Not currently linked to SDSU, but the type of player we're looking for. I would not be surprised if we had inquires out for him. Played 110 games in 4 years at St Bonnies, started 105 of them.
