Behind a paywall, great read for subscribers. theathletic.com/2838859/2021/09/22/culture-wins-san-diego-state-has-6-new-players-but-brian-dutcher-is-unafraid-of-whats-next/---"It doesn’t, it hasn’t, and this season it won’t — again. San Diego State’s roster may have six new faces (four transfers and two freshmen), but the story will be much the same. In fact, the Aztecs have won so much for so long that one could argue that this is the country’s pre-eminent mid-major program (non-Gonzaga division). Over the last 11 seasons, the Aztecs have won or shared the Mountain West regular season title seven times. They have reached the 30-win mark three times. They have played in eight of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments. Two years ago, the Aztecs were the country’s last remaining undefeated team and were headed for a No. 2 seed before March Madness was canceled. The program also has three alumni who started for NBA teams last season, most notably Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard, a five-time All-Star and two-time Finals MVP."

Houston is probably the preeminent non-Gonzaga team from a non-power conference, at the moment. Memphis might surpass them this season, with their recruiting. Over the long term, Wichita State maybe?
This doesn't diminish SDSU's program at all. We've done very well and we're right up there. What hasn't happened is another nice March Madness run. It's been seven years since our last Sweet 16. Getting stuck with Syracuse last season was a major setback nationally, and the game exposed us.

ManBun also knocked the Aztecs down some pegs a few years ago.
And FIU.

Sadly, 2020 very well could have been the Final 4 run that SDSU needed to get into that next tier.

My only question is who's the 2nd FR he's referring to (four transfers and two freshmen)?? You typically only refer to scholarship players, so I doubt the WO Max Wilson counts since he'll rarely ever play, and D Johnson's the only FR I'm aware of. I only count 5 true additions (Bradley, LeDee, Baker-Mazara, Diabate, Johnson).

Wish I could read the entire article... If you love college hoops it's worth the investment, especially in October, February & March.

Normally, I just refuse to subscribe to places and because of that --- I get to read less of my favorite business and sports writers these days. SI.com also just went subscription. However, for the price and what you get , The Athletic is worth every cent. Their content kicks ass. It's the only sports paywall subscription I have.

My Athletic subscription ended a few months ago, but during the season I believe they probably put out an SDSU-related article every week or two? The Athletic is better at breaking news for professional sports teams that's worth them having a dedicated beat writer; I think Zeigler & SDUT is good enough for SDSU-related content.

They have writers who specifically focus on G5/Midmajor content so Aztecs come up often. They also do Q&A's where people can ask about their teams or conferences and usually someone will bring up the MWC or SDSU. Put another way, their Aztec content is better than any national blog/mag.
