I'm going out on a limb here after reading the bio's on our new transfers. Seems that Dutch may want to go a little bigger this year. Problem I see with my lineup could be perceived lack of scoring.
5. Mensah- Hopefully, much improved offensively. 4. Diabate- Big body who is excellent rebounder and a pretty good scorer. This is my edgiest pick. 3. KJ- Has worked extremely hard this off season and rebuilt his body. I moved him to the 3 because of Diabate at the 4. 2. Bradley- All Pac12. Nothing else to say other than he could start at the 3 if Diabate doesn't start. Primary outside threat w/Dinwiddie. 1. Pulliam- One of the most improved players due to new found confidence from the latter part of last season.
First 5 off the bench are Seiko, Butler, Baker, Dinwiddie and Tomaic.
I won't have my feelings hurt by critical assessments of my predictions. Just wanted to get the ball rolling on a topic that I think is interesting and exciting.
Anyone have any inside info on how the players are looking in workouts?

Agree, except I can see Chad Baker at 3 with KJ at the 4.

I'm sure KJ has rebuilt his body but I'm more hopeful that he's rebuilt his shot. I'll be rooting hard for a good kid with a whole lot of athletic gifts.

connected question; will they be improved at every position because most of their competition will be? Mensah, yes Pulliam, yes Bradley, yes over any who played last year at 2 or 3. KJ hopefully Baker or Butler over any who played 2 or 3? maybe...
bench? Seiko yes, Dinwiddie yes, Tomaic yes.

1. Pulliam/Butler/Seiko 2. Butler/Bradley/Baker 3. Bradley/Baker/KJ 4. Arop/KJ/Diabate 5. Mensah/Tomaic/Diabate
A few things: * This team is super deep. * Pulliam needs to take that half-step up and become an elite PG. * Butler's going to get a lot of playing time at the 1 and 2. * Seiko got a ton of summer experience playing for the Ugandan National Team in the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Tournament in Rwanda in August. His team made it to the quarterfinals, with Seiko averaging 13 ppg. He was 47% from behind the arc and shot 100% on his FTs. * Bradley is going to be on the floor 90% of the time at either the 2 or the 3. * Baker is going to fill the role of Schakel. He shot 42% from behind the arc last year. * KJ is going to need to shoot better and have a better grasp of the flow of the game. If he does, he could be a force at the 3/4. If not, well, he'll be a good spark of the bench. * If Arop can stay healthy, he could make a huge contribution to this team. He's a nightmare for other teams on defense. And Dutcher loves defense. He can also provide spark on offense with his slashing style and athleticism. * Diabate will give us some size, skill and athleticism at the 4/5. * Mensah needs to put it all together this year and become a dominant big man on both ends of the court.

I don't know. A starting lineup of Pulliam, Arop and Mensah doesn't provide many scoring options and allows teams to double Bradley...

You guys that keep up with this stuff year-round get mad props.
I just sort of wait til the UT's preseason article the week of the first game and go from there to even have a trace of recognition of who is still on the team and who is brand new -- which makes it all the weirder on Senior Night when I'm crushed that so many of them are leaving.

Hopefully, he'll have a breakout year and make this team even deeper/better than it already projects...

Think most people would agree that Trey at PG , Nathan at the 5 plus Matt B at either the 2 or 3 are very likely starters .
Very fortunate to have a 5th year senior in Trey running the show ( also watched him run the offense on his Swish team and make an extra effort to be a solid contributor on offense - making FT's , taking outside shots and even taking to the basket ) Nathan was on the same team as Trey - he also was working on his offense but hard to really tell that much as others did not play a lot of defense - while Nathan did . He did seem slimmer so could run the court even better . He was taking some short jumpers and might have been slightly better on FT 's . Would guess Lamont is the back up to Trey at PG and my guess the transfer TD( Diabate ) backing up Nathan at the 5 . If not then Joshua - but think he would prefer to play the 4 . So we look pretty solid at the 1 and 5 positions.
Believe Matt B was the MVP of the Swish League - was his team's go to guy . He will start at the 2 or 3 depending on who has developed the most at the 2 or 3 position - plus the 4 . By the way not sure if it is important both Nathan and Matt B are left handed - Will leave it to the experts we have to provide comments.
At the 2 position saw KD play in the Swish - he continues to be a consistent scorer - with a wide variety of shots from outside , he can create his three off the dribble or just set up and shoot , Also takes it to the basket with authority - even in a crowd - also quite important makes his FT's . Do realize Swish is an offensive League .Adam was playing in a T abroad and believe reports were that he performed well . In addition he knows the defense being a 4th year senior and is definitely a team player that knows what is most important is getting a team W . Do either KD or Adam become a starter ? If so that means Matt B plays the 3 position .
So then we take a look at KJ , Brad , AG , and possibly Joshua to see who has developed the most to step up as a starter at the 4 or even start at the 3 if Matt B plays the 3 . Saw KJ play at Swish and it seemed he would either be very good or kind of take it very easy . When he did turn it on he was a beast taking it to the basket . Outside shot - same thing on and off , also FT's in one stretch missed 3 in a row then made 3 . Did not see brad play - is known for his FG and FT% and interview said all the right things he was a team player first - he also would need to play AZTEC defense - that is not always easy to learn . AG was working at Basketball Camp back at his home - he has been known to be a great defender and rebounder , outside shot and FT's were below standard - also major question has been Health - seems injury prone .
Look forward to hearing the reports when they come out about practices . Should be very competitive for the 3 positions and we know how important Defense is to the Aztec Coaches .
Have seen the reports out of BYU they are expecting to have their best team since the days of Jimmer - We do play a "pay game early before BYU " but the game AT BYU will be very important for our OOC . So maybe a guess that we play a high quality opponent in a Controlled scrimmage - without fans in attendance .
Looking forward to seeing Zeigler articles

Pulliam, Bradley, Baker-Mazara, Arop (I'd start someone else) and Mensah.

Until they get into full practices with both offense and defense - difficult to really make a definitive prediction . KJ does know both the offense and defense so could be a starter - not much information on Baker and if he has learned the defense ?
At BYU is a very important game . Their projected line up: 2 5th year senior guards both about 6'2" - and as we know Barcello ( can really score the basketball and they also have the transfer PG . Their forwards are expected to be about 6'6 / 6'7' and either 6'9" or 6'11" at the 5 . All experienced players .
So maybe a " controlled Scrimmage ? " a buy game for true game time experience then off to a Good BYU team with a big crowd .

Until reading this thread, I had forgotten the depth of this team. From a top line skill perspective, not sure this is our most skilled team ever. But, from a depth standpoint, might be the deepest team ever.

Hate using position #'s when we tend to play more "position-less" ball than most, but will stick with them for the purposes of this thread. I like this format, but would tweak the above somewhat: 1. Pulliam/Butler/Seiko 2. Seiko/Bradley/Dinwiddie/Butler 3. Bradley/Seiko/Baker-Mazara/KJ 4. KJ/Arop/Tomiac 5. Mensah/Tomaic/Diabate Ultimately, I see Pulliam, Bradley & Nate as locks, with the final 2 spots coming from Seiko, Keshad, Baker-Mazara & potentially Dinwiddie. When it comes to the rotation, I'd take those 7 & add Butler & Tomiac for sure, and Diamate &, if (or when) healthy, AG competing for those spots. Rotation Notes: * To touch on the depth factor, I've listed 11 above & the reality is only 9 will be in the rotation saying that AG and Diamate have even a slight chance of being on the outside looking in is incredible. IMO if AG is healthy, and can stay healthy for 2+ weeks he replaces someone. Who I don't know, but he's a starter on most MWC teams when fully healthy. Including ours. I just expect another similar year to last year with his vertigo, which makes it tough to trust him in the rotation. * Not only do we have depth we have amazing flexibility. Only Trey, Nate & probably Butler & Dinwiddie are really 1-position types. Bradley can play 2-4; Seiko 1-3 (although more 2-3); Keshad & Baker-Mazara both 3-4; Tomiac 4-5, etc. It basically turns a potential 11 man rotation into 13 if not 14, given you can move them around. Even if you narrow to 9 it's really 11-13 guys when looking at the ability to cover positions. * We pretty much know D Johnson will RS, and LeDee most likely. I'd actually think LeDee would RS even if granted a waiver, given the depth, even though he'd be in the rotation. * Unfortunately I see Che still on the outside looking in. He's a 1-trick pony - shooter. I don't see him improving his handles to where he can take guys off the dribble or his lateral movement on D to where he gets in the rotation. Other comments: * Pulliam will continue to gain confidence & his hesitation dribble is better than anyone on our roster. He took about 19% of our shots in conference play when on the floor, and while I think he could boost that some & be effective, the talent around him doesn't make it necessary. * Butler's going to be a very, very good player & if he's improved his perimeter game significantly he could play in tandem with Trey. Definitely gives us a quick backcourt. I just have a belief that Dinwiddie's a better fit with this current roster from a rotation perspective (i.e. shooter), and Butler will take his giant leap next year. * Agree with prior comments on Seiko. With Dutch its all about "trust", and Seiko can be trusted in a very big way. Definitely, along with Trey, our best defender, and a lights out shooter who's getting more & more consistent. If his summer on the U National Team allowed him to improve his drive game watch out. * Bradley is Bradley; 'nough said. He's Matt with better handles & a little less size. * Baker & KJ give us 2 strong 3/4 combo guys with similar games. I personally believe KJ is going to breakout in a big way, and if he secures the "4" & Baker-Mazara the "3" (although technically they'd be interchangeable) watch out! Speed, athleticism galore. * Tomiac will be looked at to fill roles at both the "4" & "5", or better put "post" position. He's more an old school "4: + fluid "5" combo guy. * Diabate, based on very early stuff I've heard, is more a "5" than a "4" on this roster, but he give us some muscle & size. * Mensah is due to breakout offensively; he's already elite defensively. Can't wait for this season to start! Booked trips to Michigan & Phoenix, and got my tix for Anaheim! Those 4 games + the 15 home games alone will make for a lot of fun! NY's in Vegas?? Maybe... I'm sure both of these have been shared previously on this board, but if you haven't checked them out here's a great review by Three Man Weave, plus Barttorvik's computer forecast. Spoiler alert - 1 has us #32 & the other #38, basically in the tourney as conference champs or as an at-large. (both are free sites) www.three-man-weave.com/3mw/san-diego-state-2022-previewbarttorvik.com/team.php?team=San+Diego+St.&year=2022

Not sure that we have a blockbuster POY candidate a la Kawhi or Jamal or Xavier or Malachi (maybe Bradley has a shot), but we definitely have some serious depth. We'll be able to rotate guys in and out, depending on the situations and match-ups. We also have a great mix of experience and youth. Gonna be fun to watch.

This incredible depth will help out so much in the damn MWC-altitude games. I really hope KD sees the floor enough to get his stroke going.
