I like it on Sunday because the game is still fresh in my mind. Thank you for doing this. Have to disagree on the coaching score. Run up the gut is not a creative strategy and we will beat killed by teams that stop the run. Why did we wait until OT to try some creative pas plays? Hecklinski is waaayyyy to conservative. And coaching has not stopped stupid penalties, that has to be added into the coaching score.

I know this is a common complaint with our team. It would be appear that the reality of the situation is that we simply do not seem to recruit talented enough QB's to where we can open up the playbook. If the plays seem vanilla, it's because that's all our offense is capable of. You can't have someone go out there and sling the football if they are not capable of it.

A little generous IMO, but wish I'd had more teachers like you when report cards came out.
Sunday reports are fine by me.

I agree about being too conservative on O. Controlling the clock is not just running off tackle every play. We can still run short passes, or even throw in some miss-direction on an end around or reverse. We need to utilize our speed more. In addition, we have mobile QB's let them rollout and use the RPO more. It will still keep the clock moving. How many throws have we made in the 4th Q not including OT this year? I can think of maybe 3, as we have tried to kill the clock with ground and pound.

QBs are still a solid C for me. (Hey, Cs get degrees.) This grade is based on talent, or expected talent, because if your own coaches don't have enough faith in you to throw just a couple passes to salt away a game in the 4th quarter, you don't even have a ceiling high enough for an A grade. ... Liked Johnson's running, though.

Very difficult to grade some categories or maybe need to split the game up into the First half , 3rd Q , 4th Q and OT
One thing it dramatically shows that If you have a QB ( in this case Utah's Back Up or former starter ) that can throw the ball you can stay in the game and they came very close to winning it .
We had 2 scoring drives for TD's and 1 set up by the INT - so we basically ran well only in the third Q .
Kicker Matt A was unbelievably Jeckle / Hyde made a long FG and then missed TWO . He could have won the game in regular time - and do not think there was wind issues . Had booming punts but it does show how important it can be to make sure you have hang time and good gunners . Matt did make some good tackles
The fumble was troublesome - when you do not have solid drives . Do think the ball hit our TE Rudolph - but should Bell run with 2 hands on the ball and make a little better effort to recover fumble . Do know he gets a lot of yardage after being hit - so wonder how well the OL played but everyone in the stadium knew we were going to run Bell - Almost forgot to mention he was injured for a while so our Offense was even more stagnant .
Offense was pretty Vanilla and predictable so not easy to get good marks
Defense ;played very well in the first half then got worn down by the 4th Q . Then they shredded us . Our DL was gassed . We also lost one of our best players -Safety for targeting - so played 3 Q's without him . Got a terrible call on Pass Interference in the end zone - that set up one of their TD's . Does show how the game favors the offense - especially passing - so we need to really develop the passing game . Think other teams know we are young at DB so are going to exploit that also .
Have no information on how the coaches thought our WR's played - were they primarily used to block or on special teams or did they have difficulty getting open or Lucas having time to find them
Thought our WR 45 is it Mathews ? actually threw the Winning 2 point conversion to Lucas - so that was positive
Was hard to tell if Lucas had time or if passes were called to the WR's ? Think we played a good portion of the game with 2 TE''s and not that many Wr's Did like QB's catch on the 2 point play
Not the easiest to grade a game like this as it was different third and fourth Q
But will repeat Do need an effective Passing attack -

The RPO should prevent the defenses from stacking the line. That's the key. So when we do hand off to the RBs they'll have less defenders past the LOS.

Unfortunately opposing teams will continue to load the box and make our QB beat them until our OC can come up with game plan that includes even a short passing game to open up the game plan
Wonder would even a short quick passing game similar to what New Mexico State did in our game in the first half work for the Aztecs
We really dominated UTAH for 3 Q's- but with a good passing attack they were able to tie the game . Our DL got tired and soon they were able to shred us with their passing game . The rules favor the offense and especially passing - so either we get a decent passing game or it could get even tougher as we play teams with a solid passing game

Our QB's can't throw a 5 yard out to the short side of the field. Their mechanic's are not good as is the same with their foot work. These things are taught starting in Pop Warner. If you don't have the basics for throwing you will not be successful. So Cal is a hot bed for QB's that know how to throw. I guess nobody at SDSU has been successful recruiting one or one with a strong arm and good mechanics.

No way coaching gets an A+. Not with the way they tried to run out the clock the whole 4th quarter. They weren't aggressive at all near the end, running the ball twice on key 3rd downs including a 3rd and 8. Coached not to lose which almost happened.

At times the offense looked like a windup toy car harmlessly bumping up against a wall. There is zero balance to this offense. Conventional wisdom dictates an occasional throw downfield would open up more running lanes, right now the opponent safeties and linebackers are practically breathing on their own d linemen. With the exception of 2 running plays, Utah’s defense pretty much controlled the game. If this is the best Hecklinski can come up with, he should be coaching Pop Warner somewhere. Coaching…..C- at best. The Aztecs gave up a 2 TD lead in the last 5 minutes of the game and were lucky to win.

You haven't been paying attention. With the exception of the entire NMST game minus 2 drives, this offense is far more creative when the Aztecs are losing, tied or leading in the first half than when it takes a comfortable lead in the 2nd half. If Hoke had zero trust in the QBs, you'd see Martyball all the time. You never see SDSU open OT with 3 straight passes and you definitely don't see the Philly Special in the 3rd OT. This is on Hoke's stupid Martyball philosophy.

Coaching gets a C
They get an A for the game plan and everything until Hoke went Martyball.
They get an F for in-game adjustments.
Martyball vs a Pac-12 school only up by 14 points with an entire quarter left earns you that F. It nearly cost his team the game.

You can see Heck's influence when we don't have a 2nd half lead. Like overtime. Have you been near a coaching staff when they take a comfortable lead? The HC tells the OC to dial it down.

Paul, always enjoy your articles. For the grades unfortunately your too high and looks like your grading on a slide. Several are Homer grades. I would start by lowering each grade down by one and you would be pretty close. Too many stalled Aztec drives for the night, special teams was good and bad, that offside on a punt that negated the block and gave Utah a first down was ridiculous. That was as bad as a turnover. Targeting call was targeting, can’t do that. Tackling in the fourth quarter became sloppy with Utah’s QB extending plays from both DL and LB’s when they failed to wrap up the ball carrier and QB. A wins a win, although it should not of been that close.

I never said our QB's are incapable of throwing a single pass, just not talented enough to sling the ball around all game. But hey, I'll defer to your superior football IQ and when Hoke's contract is up I hope to see you throw your coaching hat into the ring.
