Where they were playing had something to do with that, too. Lame, don’t make excuses for pitchers who groove fat pitches in the 9th inning. The problem is pitchers who have lost their command or have had their stuff flatten out. I guess that can be blamed on the pitching coach. The other issue is there are too many pitchers throwing in the majors who should probably be in the minors, but are forced into service by injuries. Matt Strahm, after over a year of rehabilitation could only manage 6 mediocre innings before he had to shut it down. Pomeranz, Wingenter, Kela, Castillo, Guerra, Altavilla, Baez, Morejon all done for the season. There is something just not right here. The Padres are missing something in terms of strengthening conditioning or therapeutics. Maybe there is something to my flesh eating bacteria theory. Going from a heavily condensed season with reduced workloads to a full season with heavy workloads. Injuries are up across the league at a pretty severe rate, but yeah, team's been pretty snakebitten. Nobody is making excuses, but Coors Field isn't exactly a pitcher's paradise.

Pierce Johnson starts tonight, so Yu's obviously not quite back to full health. The usage going forward will be interesting. The Dodgers have had the benefit of really utilizing their off days in August, leaning on Urias, Scherzer and Buehler for a good chunk of their innings.

The Dodgers have had nearly the same amount of bullpen games in August that the Padres have had. . Then what does that tell you? That every team (and most notably the most progressive organizations in baseball) are utilizing bullpen games because they effectively counter basic lineup strategy.

One advantage of a BP game is that theoretically, every pitcher comes in hot. They can fire away for an inning - or maybe two. It's like a relay race. The opponents pretty much know who they might probably face, but they have a much harder time planning for it. If the teams are closely matched - as theoretically the Padres and Dogs are - then there might be a slight advantage for the Padres, since they know who they'll likely be bringing in. Of course, as soon as the first pitch is thrown, all those plans can go right out the window - especially if that first batter hits one out…
The Padres have arms that can come in and sweat bullets. Whether they can keep the ball out of the Dogs' hot zones remains an open question.

Oh joy, Pierce Johnson gets the start in an extremely important series. What next?!!! Well, Johnson came in hot and hard … LOL … strikes out two in the first inning. Of course, instead of getting him out out of there while the getting's good, Johnson goes limp in the second with the first batter hitting one out of the park. Stay tuned for more nonsense - and there it is. Walks the second batter. Now, Tingler decides to make a move.… as always, a few batters too late. Jeebus.

When your team can't score more than a run or two, your pitching staff can't give up two runs, let alone five.
Another loss for a team that is headed at light speed into irrelevance.
Another in the long history of jokes on San Diego baseball fans: this year's much ballyhooed and obviously oversold Padres.

If they'd shown more signs of life than one inspired game in the last week I'd agree with you, but at this point having hope just feels pointless/like delaying the inevitable.
