Same crap calls as last time he was behind the plate. Seems like after that previous game, there were plenty of comments about his wandering strike zone. Apparently, he's consistent in his inconsistency.

Possibly not personal in the Miami game, but maybe so. Definitely holding on to some partiality last night, however. Guess it's human nature, but umpires are paid to be impartial. A bit like teachers being paid to be nice to kids, and actors being paid to be someone they aren't.
I'd sure like to see some sanctions on this one. Seems like once they get to the bigs, they're in there for life.

Maybe the cryptocurrency traders they advertise on their shirts … they must have some virtual influence - LOL. Otherwise, it's up to MLB to keep some of these guys from becoming the very game they're supposed to be impartially judging … they have contracts with someone, right?

The umpires have union protection and any punishment has to go through a process, shall we say. Their association is protected under the collective bargaining agreement.

So you're saying his case is somewhat like the case of a poor teacher with tenure. Short of actually committing a crime then, it'd be hard to "get rid" of him just for not being a good umpire.
But there certainly must be some administrative remedies written into the contract … otherwise they'd get stuck with someone like Eddings and be, well, just stuck with him with no recourse to remedy the situation.
Of course, I guess MLB would have to agree that there's a problem - and therein may be the problem

They might get "removed" from the rotation for a series, for instance. Not sure how COVID would complicate that because umpires haven't traveled really outside of their zones.

Eddings gave us a few make up calls with some check swings.

It would appear at least one court disagrees with him, regarding the so-called "discrimination". But...he has established a very long career. Of being a REALLY bad umpire.

From some other reading I've done, it seems like umpires can easily ignore any kind of professional development they may receive. The only real consequence of failing to improve their game, so to speak, is that they're left out of post-season assignments - and then, really it's just the LCS or WS since some amount of seniority rights still exist. Seems like a perfect recipe for the umpire who, like Doug Eddings and others, simply believe that their call is always the right call.
So unless the Padres want to make peace with this clown, they'd better hope they don't see him behind the plate over the last 6 weeks of the season - though with the "zoning" of umpire crews, that may be impossible.
