I'm not convinced the Padres will cut bait yet, but if they do, the next pitching coach hire has to be the start of systemic changes. There's a bit of a disconnect here between certain parties.
Would really like to see a young, data-guided pitching coach and more of an organizational shift towards developing more in-house pitching. The Reds hit a home run by hiring Kyle Boddy, who interviewed with the Padres in a pitching coordinator capacity. I'd like to see something similar happen here.

I'm not convinced that a pitching coach with a long history & who had the entire staff among the top 3 in MLB heading into the AS break is the reason for them performing poorly since. If you're telling me he's the reason Morejon, Paddack, Darvish & others are coming up lame, then that's different. But don't see it.

Luck - or lack thereof - seems to have quite a bit to do with this year's Padres pitching foibles. Unless these pitchers are simply ignoring coaching - or indeed they're blindly following some really bad coaching and getting bad prep on top of that - it's hard to blame just the pitching coach. These guys are constantly looking at their cards - so unless that data is bad, or outdated, what's going on?
Seems obvious that pitchers throw thousands of pitches before they ever get to the Padres. So do their coaches go too? And what about strength and conditioning coaches and trainers? What role are they playing?
Regardless, it's a problem, and there are solutions out there. Unfortunately in baseball, they're typically found by firing coaches and managers. So it is fair to predict that if the team continues to circle the drain, and indeed gets flushed during the last month of the season, there will be some people looking for new jobs this winter.

Maybe the Padres can do what they did with their manager - make two of them: one pitching coach for the kiddos who need development, and the other for the vets who just need a few 'new tricks' to squeeze out a few more seasons. Each needs specialized attention.

Can't believe this thread has made it 6 or 7 replies with no mention of Darren Balsley yet. LOL!

Kyle Boddy is incredible at pitcher development; he build his pitching lab in the Seattle area 15 years ago or so. Super state of the art and data-driven. Helped to develop Trevor Bauer and others. Smart person who is pretty highly thought of in baseball circles. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up back on the West Coast, especially Seattle.

When the Padres dismiss Tingler this will be resolved. Tingler isn't the problem. Agree. He’s doing a gallant job given the current situation. It’s a crazy balancing act; every day it seems like there’s some new and unforeseen condition to be factored into the equation…he looks beat. They all do right now. It’s been one hell of a month!

The Padres had something in the neighborhood of 12 or 13 starting pitching options that were legitimate choices: Lamet (hurt), Morejon (hurt), Darvish (hurt), Paddack (hurt), Clevinger (hurt), Snell (worst version of his career), Musgrove, Gore (mechanics, blister issues), Lawson (hurt twice), Weathers (innings limit/Rookie wall), Baez (Tommy John), Avila (hurt, still rehabbing)...It's a lot to overcome to replace basically two MLB rotations.

Injuries are up across the league, and the Padres were more delicate with their usage early on to try and prevent this. Paddack's injury is just a fluke, IMO. Darvish has had back problems in the past, so this seems just like more of the same. Part of the problem is the Padres take more chances on guys with medical red flags.

It does seem like lots more arms are crapping earlier out this season - with pitchers well represented on the 60-day IL on quite a few teams.
I wonder how much last year's shortened season - one not started until well after spring training was basically over - played into this year's arm issues.
That's never happened in most players' careers. I'm sure many continued on with some conditioning during the break between end of Spring Training and when the short season actually started, but pitchers - game prep conditioning? When they did start it up again there was a sprint to the finish line - and then for most teams it was over. Makes me wonder how many of these injuries actually happened a year ago.
