Padres signed starting pitcher Jake Arrieta at the (prorated) major league minimum rate today. Arrieta has performed pretty poorly with the Cubs this year before being released by them, posting a 6.88 ERA and -2.1 WAR over 20 starts. He has given up a lot of home runs this year (21), and 44.9% of balls in play have been hard hit (95+ exit velo) On the other hand, pitching in Chicago slightly hurt his ERA this year, and has turned some fly balls into homers (7.34 home ERA vs. 6.58 away ERA) Arrieta is set to start on Wednesday vs the Rockies in Coors Field. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/08/padres-sign-jake-arrieta.html

Wish I had an outfield seat for that game, and my glove.

If he's able to give us 5 innings it's a bonus - as good if not better than what Knehr &/or Crismatt may have given us, while most likely going deeper. Hopefully he can capture his form from April/May rather than July/August, but definitely a tough place to do so! He went 4 innings, giving up 4 runs there a couple weeks ago....I'd love to get 5 & 4 (or 5 & 3) from him! Ultimately, we'll need to score runs to win, but that's usually the formula at Coors!

It would be nice if we could trade for a solid AA or AAA SP prospect, since trading with minor league players is still allowed. Give a kid a chance, kind of like how we gave Weathers a chance last year in the playoffs.

The wheels started coming off for Arrieta his last start in April. This would seem be a bit of a desperation move by the Padres. His numbers at Coors Field are pretty bad (albeit a small sample size).

Yes but its still possible in a prospect exchange type deal.

It's really too bad they didn't revert to the 2019 trading deadline rules & keep the August waiver deadline. I'd be curious to know if a team or two would try & sneak a few higher paid players through the waiver process, and make a late season trade (at a lower cost to us) of a rental. Verlander definitely comes to mind in the past, among several others. Pandemic changed all that. For now, Arrieta is the new "waiver" deadline acquisition. Hopefully he finds the fountain of youth in SD!

We are desperate, so I have no issues with this. Don't think we could have predicted both Paddack & Darvish going down at the same time and this is what we're left with. It's not like we're hoping he leads us to the promised land. We just want him to save the bullpen during a really rough stretch of 13 games in 13 days.

And the one quality start was after 13 days off. And this is what starting pitching has become, when his May numbers are "not that bad". He's not getting deep into games as he can't get batters out consistently--why the Cubs released him. But we can agree on one thing--we are desperate.

Arrieta officially activated for today's game, while Matt Strahm goes back on the injured list with right knee inflammation.

At least he got a hit and scored a run - more than can be said for many in the lineup as of late.

If you didn't believe in the injury curse before, Arrieta (who I don't think has a history of injuries of late) out due to injury. Unreal. Didn't think he pitched that poorly - looked like he got pinched by the ump & no way he should get charged for that Grisham FU. If he's OK injury-wise I thought he earned another look.

Have to start wondering what the heck’s going on with the injuries to the starting pitchers.

Will the CroneZone make another appearance on the mound this year?
Desperate times call for... well you know the rest.

Didn't watch the game yet, but really expected a much more brutal outing - especially at Coors Field. Did he slip on the mound or while running?

I have been watching the Padres all of my life, I have never seen this many injuries to pitchers. It’s pretty much the same with the Dodgers (Kershaw, Urias, Gonsolin, May, Bauer, Hammels) Mets, Cardinals and Giants, pitching MLB may be the most hazardous job in the country!
Seriously, even if baseball won’t or can’t admit it, there is something amiss and MLB needs to take steps to protect it’s players.
