JayDee Luster is the new Assistant coach. He's been at Pacific the last few years so he knows Bryd and his father very well. That can't hurt our chances if his kid wants to get out of Stockton(who wouldn't?) but wants to stay in California.

Byrd is planning a visit to San Diego State in early September. Father Calvin, had standout career at Villanova University, then played professional basketball in the Atlantic Basketball Association and in Switzerland. He currently is a 10th year assistant coach at the Univ of the Pacific. Aztecs hire JayDee Luster 5 year Assistant Coach at Pacific to replace Jay Morris. Perhaps, Stockton native Miles Byrd will follow him to the Mesa.

From SDUT-9/1/2021 Byrd, a 6-7 lefty from Lincoln High in Stockton, has gone from no Division I offers at this time last year to interest from the Pac-12 and Big Ten (and a four-star rating from 247Sports) once coaches realized that he’s two years younger than many seniors. He doesn’t turn 17 until October. Translation: high ceiling.
New SDSU assistant coach JayDee Luster, who replaced Jay Morris last week, knows Byrd well. Luster coached with his father, Calvin, at Pacific and was their neighbor in Stockton.
Byrd visited Colorado State earlier this month and has trips planned to Washington and Minnesota later in September. Villanova, where his father played in the early 1990s, has shown interest but not offered.

Official visit this weekend, Aztecs top three for the class of 2022; 6'7" SF/Wing Miles Byrd, 6'8" PF/SF Elijah Saunders, & 6'2" CG Koren Johnson I’ll post this here… Koren is about 85% coming to State Myles is more like 65%, but trending up Saunders is more like 50%, but if Nova doesn’t offer that number goes up to 65% or so.

Three would be excellent, two great, one good. We have a few plan B players. Plus another huge transfer market coming up.

It’s funny, sometimes I have sources and sometimes I have sources who either won’t tell me or are not sure… for the last two recruiting cycles I haven’t had great information so I have been reluctant to post anything definitive. I feel pretty good about what I’ve heard on these guys. and you are right, there are several plan “B” guys for each of these spots and as has been published by Z, the Aztecs plan on being active in the transfer market.

Nothing is definite until they are officially signed - is it the same as in previous years Early Signing Period is the first week in November ?
Think we also know that the Aztecs will be closely watching the Transfer Portal although not sure when most may apply ?
This is also still a year when guys can come back for an additional season - Adam , Nathan , AG ,( they would allow the Aztecs to have more then 13 scholarships ) Not sure about if TD ( the transfer from Portland can Petition for an additional season ) do think if Matt B . has a good season he will heads for the Pros
So we could have up to 7 openings for scholarships -or more if some of the younger guys chose to transfer out ?
We do know Trey and Joshua will be playing in their last season and very likely Matt B
So it does make the recruiting even more interesting for the coaches

I think Nathan and his people might want him to get as much out of his education as possible and continue to work on his basketball skills especially since he got a later start then most . Is he healthy and what is best for him ?
Adam and AG have no clue what they may choose to do- for AG health is also an issue
TD - I think would have to get a waiver not really sure that will happen or if he wants to ?
Would guess that for most of the guys it is concentrate on this season and then worry about the extra season when the time comes

Don't forget we're 1 over the scholarship limit, and have 7 guys scheduled to return next year even if every 'senior' bolts (LeDee, both Johnsons, Evans, Dinwiddie, Butler, Baker-Mazara). Talking about "6" basically ignores any of the 8 'seniors' and focuses on the generic # of those "eligible" to return. I'm guessing we'll have at least 1 if not 2 guys who use their extra free year, reducing that # to 5 if not 4, although I also wouldn't be surprised if 1 of our returners decides to leave for PT.
