At 41, he's probably "past his prime". But he's still got some pop, and he's a "well seasoned" player. Plenty of history to impart on his teammates, and he's always been characterized as very approachable. TB splurged a little to get him, and the Twins cut some payroll and got a few minor league arms. On the surface, Tampa Bay gets a real deal. And as mentioned, he's already hit one out for the Rays.

“ MIAMI — In the first 64 games of his professional career, Robert Hassell III tallied 29 extra-base hits, 24 stolen bases and an .886 OPS. The Padres’ center-field prospect entered Friday with a .419 average and a .533 on-base percentage in July. He is not yet 20 years old, and he is torching Low-A pitching. It should not be a surprise that he has emerged as one of the most coveted minor leaguers of this trade season.”

I would also take Marte over Gallo. I don’t like guys who are lifetime .212 hitters, they never come through in the clutch. Marte is available, lifetime .287 hitter with speed and a gold glove. FWIW, Marte is hitting the cover off the ball in Oakland (.398 w 10 rbi and 9 sb) with some dramatic game winning moments. Gallo is hitting .140 and has been striking out nearly half his ab’s for The Yankees. Very glad the Padres didn’t pull the trigger to get this whiffer.

Agreed. Gallo is actually a damned good player, but also very streaky ----- and I wanted NO part of moving RHIII for him.
Now, would I have moved RHIII for a package including Trea and Mad Max? Yes.

Good call on Marte I'm glad that we still have Hassell Trading away future all-star prospects, while you're in third place in your division, no matter how talented your team is, is rarely going to be the right decision. Better to wait until the offseason when the price is lower.
