Interesting move. I enjoyed my encounters with Rich when he was early in his tenure. USD goes up and down in its support for athletics, and they're definitely in a low phase right now. Can't blame him for thinking he's done all he can there. Hope he's okay with long plane rides!

Yes, it's fine if you do it sometimes, such as a road series at Hawaii as an opposing coach, but to do it several times a month would be hell. (Of course, I'm writing this in a lounge at the Denver airport, after falling victim to the big Southwest failures this week )

Best of Luck to Rich, he played for the Aztecs to start his collegiate playing days before moving to Cal Lutheran. Started out as a HC at the age of 24 at Cal Lutheran. If it doesn't work out, at least he has a great spot to hang out.

Hill seems like a good guy and he's had many major leaguers through his USD program.
Through the mid-2000's, I wondered why Hill was taking USD to the NCAAs, but Tony Gwynn couldn't do the same with the Aztecs.
But Hill took USD as far as he could. Since last winning the WCC and making the NCAAs in 2015, the Torreros haven't finished higher than 4th in conference.
Good luck to him. He's taking over a bad program. And Hawaii can be a tough place to live for mainland haolies. Island Fever is real - I know a few who moved there but couldn't take more than about four or five years.

Boy, that just seems completely out of left field (no pun intended). Fully random. I could see him bailing for like the Pepperdine, UCI, Beach or Fullerton gigs. But...
The Rainbows?? OK...

Unfortunately is seem like great players rarely make great coaches. I really thought Tony would be one of the exceptions.

I pay golf with a bunch of Cal Lutheran Alumni who played for Hill while he was there. They said he took the UH job because he plans to retire there after baseball.
