With the meat of the batting order up, too.
Can't win if you don't take advantage of these obvious scoring opportunities, and they can't keep wasting these opportunities … The bats need to wake up at Petco Park. At least Hosmer made (weak) contact with the ball to score one run.

3 innings later, Cubbies show the Padres how it's supposed to be done with bases loaded and no outs… scored all three runs. 4-3 now…

They'll get shellacked … kind of like what's happening right now as the Padres run through the Cubs bullpen.
Glad to see a few more batters woke up towards the end of the game …

Next night - tonight - another sad night for the offense. And against a pitcher they KNEW.
Horrible at bats.

Yep. At the game yesterday, and saw the replay of the Tatis pitch where he was called out on strikes. Brutal. The umpires are continually making the case for implementing an automated ball/strike calling system. Assuming Manfred can see beyond bigger bases, moving the pitching rubber back a foot, etc.

I think the team is just in a slump offensively. These calls obviously don't help, but even when the ball is in a hittable window, the Padres aren't squaring up well right now. And they're swinging at all kinds of stuff that's out of the zone. Maybe the slight jet lag they'll experience by tomorrow will help with timing … or not.
deGrom might be an interesting test for them since they just faced hime - even though they could face him every day and still not be able to hit most of his pitches.
… after two games in the Meadows, the Padres are being Flushed quite effectively …
