I also find it ironic that the tribal leaders at Viejas area are fired up about celebrating the Kumeyaay past but wont share a dime on anyother local Kumeyaay band but their own. If you think I am wrong then why was there a casino in santa izabel, a casino in pala and a brand new casino in jamul.

The Aztecs are significant to the region. In what way do you believe they are not. Pointing out that the arguments for removing the Aztecs as the moniker (e.g. that it is offensive) is a farce, is not outrage. It is calling it as it is. The current push is being made as to make room for the Kumeyaay. "It's offensive to use Aztecs" and then in the same breath "let's honor the Kumeyaay" That is why I support genericizing the moniker and in the process making the advancers of this illogical game eat their own dog food. I agree with you that the offense taken to the Aztec name is a farce, and that it is being done to eventually get rid of the mascot. However, I also like the idea of replacing the mascot with a Kumeyaay mascot on its own merits. I would prefer to get rid of the Padres mascot with a Kumeyaay one, but... not likely to happen. The Aztecs are significant to the regions of Central Mexico, where they built an empire, and were also significant trade partners with the various Central American civilizations that they conducted trade with. The Aztec empire did not extend into the San Diego/Tijuana region, where the Kumeyaay people have lived for thousands of years. The Aztecs lived in this region prior to their legendary migration in search of the eagle with a snake in it’s beak sitting on a cactus for a new home. Additionally, Mexicans claim Aztec Heritage as being the foundation of their national and ethnic identity. There are Millions of Mexicans who inhabit this region today. I would say that the Region is significant to Aztec History and is significant to the millions of Mexicans that live in the region.

The Padres are named after those who built the Mission in Mission Valley. There is no reason to change their name or mascot nor is there a reason for SDSU to change either as well.

I know most of you Chicken Little flunkies wouldn't honor the verbal handshake two decades later, but I'd be willing to bet a year's worth of social security checks that the Aztec name will still be firmly intact at SDSU in twenty years - and beyond. (Psssst, don't tell them S/S checks will be a thing of the past by that time)

1. The president of SDSU is a racist. 2. Everything "Aztec" associated with SDSU is not and never was intended to be derogatory. 3. They will never stop until the Aztec name is eliminated. Then they will attack something else. 4. My support for SDSU is ending.

Hell, I remember being at the stadium in 1977 against FSU where we beat #12 Florida St, 41-16. I remember us coming out and our warrior mascot throwing a flaming spear right in front of their coach. Bobby Bowden remembers that as well: Here is a link to that article, nothing but respect for our school: sandiegostate.rivals.com/news/bowden-on-sdsu-and-a-night-to-rememberOur mascot is a symbol of strength, not some sort of parody. He is the one who RALLIES us, he is the one who MOTIVATES us and he shouldn't be pushed aside like some worthless object. HE GIVES US PRIDE! I want a count, who is with me on this? I am serious. I want us to step up and tell the university this is our identity. WE ALL NEED TO STEP UP NOW, NOT BACK DOWN! I believe that one of the schools still uses a flaming spear. Hint: It's not SDSU. That same school's fans also join in and perpetuate arguably the most embarrassing and racially insensitive trope known in sports, the Tomahawk Chop.

Anyone who cares more about the name of a mascot vs. the university itself... F you. I will support my alma mater no matter the stupid mascot name. And yeah, I'll increase my donations to help compensate for anyone weak enough to allow a mascot to affect their support to SDSU. We’re back to name calling again? Ok... Here you go hoobs. You gotta fight for your right to partay!

I'd like us to keep the Aztec name. I'd REALLY like us to find a quarterback. This. In California it’s only a matter of time before some legislator writes a bill calling for the end of all insensitive, discriminatory or stigmatizing imagery and symbolism at all public institutions. And then Aztecs will be gone. I’ve already accepted the near certainty that well before the end of this decade we will have a different name. If you want to talk about traditions worth saving, let’s return to the days of QBs who could hit a guy running a streak from 65 yards while rolling out.

From the alumni newsletter:
We Are the Aztecs SDSU is amplifying and staying with the Aztec moniker, and continuing to enhance education. The human spirit leader is being retired as part of a year-long process. Read the full text of the university’s June 4 announcement.

One thing you are right about, panammaniac, it is a touchy issue and unfortunately it should not be like this. But, keep this in mind the Aztecs, and their culture are Not Native American. They are from Mexico as they lived and survived in and around the Mexico City area. So, in one sense those who are complaining that we are abusing or being offensive in using their name don't even know what they are talking about!
It is just a small minority of Non-Aztec people trying to run The University and make a name for themselves, using something like this as a lame excuse to take control. We do not belittle or abuse the honor of using the Aztecs name or emblems for all of our athletic teams and school! They are trying to make us feel embarrassed about doing so. They are full of B.S. I am totally surprised that our President is even going along with some of this! She should know better, and have more sense that that!
A proud AZTEC of 1972 and not ashamed!
