The Aztec Name will be in the chopping block next. As they described in the resolution, the authors disfavor using the Aztec name and imagery instead of the Kumeyaay. They have been successful in bringing down the Aztec Warrior, we must refuse them the ability to rename to Kumeyaay. After years of being told that it is cultural appropriation, to then be hoisted their chosen name to honor. That’s the great irony, they have been banging on about how it’s offensive only to desire to honor the Kumeyaay. I now appreciate Stanford renaming to the Cardinals. They are actually the Cardinal. Like the color not the bird or religious officials. Yes Cardinal. They had the foresight to use a word that could denote a religious official a basic rule a serious item a song bird a color And chose the most benign of all the meanings (Though some rousers could argue that origin is the shade of color used for cardinal robes) and then doubled with no mascot with the Band adding to the fracas by adopting the Tree. An homage to the El Palo Alto. Brilliance. That is what we need to do at this moment.

Seems pretty stupid to do this while you are trying to fund a stadium.

the President's statement she Wants the Aztecs nickname to stay Aztecs Groups will then decide what they feel would be best for the "cheer leader " or what ever the term to be used so SDSU AZTECS will remain as it is Do you believe that the naysayers will stop here? Why? They will not stop. They will keep going and going. They just gave them a victory by "retiring" the Aztec Human mascot. They keep going because there has been zero push back. Give them an inch and they are going to a mile. It started with getting rid of the disgruntled Monty logo. Then they got rid of the more representative human logo for the SD Spear logo. Now there is no Human mascot. You see the pattern? It doesn't happen overnight. They won't come for the Aztec name right away but in a few years they will go after it. By looking at the history the school will cave unless there is significant push back from alumni. Meanwhile the Spartans, Trojans, Fighting Irish and Vikings all remain.

The Kumeyaay (i.e., the Viejas) are taking over. de la Torre's announcement states there are four new Kumeyaay programs/acknowledgements; a new Tribal Liason, who just happens to be Kumeyaay; and a mission going forward to "...ensure that any evocation of both the Aztecs and the Kumeyaay community — in how we speak, in the ways that we teach, and the visuals we use — are both respectful and authentic." The one page announcement references the Kumeyaay five times. Oh BTW, the SDSU student representative on the Trial Liason hiring committee is Kumeyaay. And the University Senate resolution passed last month to create a new mascot states a new commission will be formed, to be chaired by the Kumeyaay Tribal Liason, in order to "...work with other Kumeyaay tribal leaders in San Diego and Baja California to propose at least two Kumeyaay-named animals to be the new official mascot of SDSU..." thedailyaztec.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2021_update_senateagenda_packet-may4.pdf The six page Senate Resolution references the Kumeyaay thirteen times.

In almost every paragraph of her statement - she has the word Aztecs
in the middle of the statement in Bold Letters
We Are the Aztecs : Our Past , Our Future
Sure does NOT look as though she is trying to change the Nick Name AZTECS
yes there looks as though the "Mascot or Head Cheer Person " outfit could change but Not the nickname Aztecs

Give them time. I will bet my house that they will try to get rid of Aztecs within the next decade.

Have they taken a poll of current students and alumni regarding this? I'd like to see what people think on a larger scale.

Anyone who cares more about the name of a mascot vs. the university itself... F you. I will support my alma mater no matter the stupid mascot name. And yeah, I'll increase my donations to help compensate for anyone weak enough to allow a mascot to affect their support to SDSU. We’re back to name calling again? Ok...

Additionally, respondents volunteered 6,128 comments. Results of the anonymous surveys helped inform the AITF’s recommendations. Regarding the quantitative and qualitative findings, the AITF found that: 88 percent of respondents stated a desire to retain the Aztec name. 78 percent of respondents supported the retention of the Aztec Warrior. The survey of faculty and staff found that 62 percent who responded are in favor of retaining the human representation of the Aztec Warrior, with comments that it should be done in a manner that demonstrates respect, pride and honor. As respondents indicated overwhelming support for retaining the Aztec name and the Aztec Warrior, many students also called for education and other actions to ensure enhanced cultural sensitivity and respect for Native and indigenous communities and peoples. This is not about what people think, if it was, this would have died 30 years ago. Even the profs were in support.

this was just a power play for influence at the university. everybody looking for a handout for their pet project. everybody claiming to be "WOKE." Fight for the name change without concessions if your intentions are pure. instead it just comes off as old fashioned greed and selfish political maneuvering. their WOKE because they caught you asleep at the wheel.

This seems like them trying to get free advertizing to me. De la Torre could tell them that they will change the name for a ten year period at a price of a new stadium. Or She could tell them to butt out of our affairs and go bother some other univeristy in the region.

Gotchur iconography right here: We need to mass produce this image on hats and shirts and wear them to every SDSU event and function. Privately pay someone to show up in the Monte/Warrior costume for football and basketball. Flip our finger to de la Torre and show her who actually brings money to her school.
