There hasn't been an Aztec Warrior mascot since 2018. This is getting rid of the human-warrior form "spirit leader." You're really projecting to say that this is a first step to getting rid of the Aztec name. Directly from the statement: ongoing efforts to honor our Aztec identity
These next steps, driven by our Aztec Identity Education Committee, are aligned with the earlier recommendations and suggestions of the 2018 Aztec Identity Task Force, which announced that the university would continue the usage of the Aztec moniker and develop additional visuals aligned with its Aztec identity.
new "iconography," or images — such as artwork, symbols and other visual elements — that will amplify and align with our university’s Aztec identity.
We are the Aztecs.
The additional Aztec iconography developed and embraced across the coming years will instead allow us to further honor our Aztec identity, and enhance education and recognition.

They will eventually "retire" the Aztec name too. It might not be for 10 years but it will eventually happen. The group that wants to get rid of the Aztec name isn't going to be satisfied by changing Iconography.

The problem I have - and I'm not going to weigh in here on whether the Aztec name should stay or go because that's a touchy issue and I don't really have a pony in this race - is that the NCAA is wishy washy about such things. Schools like Marquette, St. Johns, North Dakota State, Arkansas State (just a few that I could think of off the top of my head) were forced to change their nicknames because Native American nicknames are offensive. Yet you have Florida State and Illinois, both very prominent, large football playing schools, out there with their Native American nicknames, cheesy Native American antics, the whole nine yards. Florida State fans still do the obnoxious tomahawk chop thing and have their chief ride in on horseback and plant his spear in the ground before every game. To me, Native American nicknames are allowed or they're not. The NCAA has allowed it at those two schools "because they have letters from local tribal leaders giving them permission." There are parts of the Seminole nation outside of Florida. I wonder if the Oklahoma Seminole Nation would be just as permissive as the Florida Seminole Nation if asked. Somehow I doubt it. This smacks of the big name, big money schools being able to buy their way into keeping their nicknames, where the smaller schools in smaller conferences either have to change them or face serious repercussions. In the case of North Dakota State they had to either change their name or risk losing their privilege of hosting NCAA hockey regionals which was by far their biggest event of any given year.
Unfortunately, if the NCAA were to do a "Native American nicknames are completely out" policy, that would probably affect SDSU - except that it's debatable because there's no living Aztec Nation. Again, not saying I'm in favor of it going either way, but it could potentially get complicated at some point down the line.

It seems to be an individual school student body thing. Some classes who happen to be more vocal about it move to get it changed. I personally am trying to find out what's offensive about some buff guy running around with a shield and concha shell doing one hand push ups in the end zone, but whatever.

It is an NCAA thing at least to a certain extent, because as I mentioned there are well documented cases of them threatening sanctions against certain schools thst didn’t change their mascot. In the case of North Dakota State, it was change your mascot or you can’t host any more hockey playoff games. What if the NCAA were to say no more basketball regionals at Viejas unless you change your moniker?not that it’s going to play out that way, but someday it could. There’s precedent for that, especially if you’re not a P5 school.

I think they take a back seat to more important things that go on the campus. JMO

I love how they dropped this on a Friday afternoon when school is out of session so most people won’t notice it until next week. I bet a bunch of SDSU folks will be on vacation and unavailable for comment next week.

Kumeyaay are not Aztecs. If the Kumeyaay had ever met the real Aztecs, they would have been absorbed and sacrificed. How then is a Kumeyaay, a primative North American gatherer hunter tribe, supposed to explain to us how to best represent one of the Greatest Civilizations of all time? What a f****** joke. what makes a Kumeyaay more akin to the Aztecs than any other race? Both got stomped by the Spanish? this is where all similarities end!

Athletic Department trying to get a head start on damage control regarding the Aztec mascot retirement.
Not a good time to be pulling this nonsense while fundraising for the new stadium.

Good luck and have fun fundraising for scholarships too. Most of that money comes from the more "established" fans that have disposable income and like the warrior/Monty tradition.

Anyone who cares more about the name of a mascot vs. the university itself... F you. I will support my alma mater no matter the stupid mascot name. And yeah, I'll increase my donations to help compensate for anyone weak enough to allow a mascot to affect their support to SDSU.
