www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article251588818.htmlI found this article interesting. It shows a willingness from the executive and legislative branches to expand research capabilities at the CSU level. Just wish they would also do something like this for SDSU. If we want to make ourselves look prettier to the P5 conferences this would be the place to start.

Good for Humboldt St. It should help revitalize the region and maybe attract some tech companies to Redwood Country. And maybe the university will become known for more than just stoners and shroomers.

A 76 billion budget surplus? How about refunding it to the tax payers?

If we want to make ourselves look prettier to the P5 conferences this would be the place to start. Key difference between us and Humboldt State is that we share a city with UCSD, and Humboldt State is not near any other top tier research institutions. Just like how USC and UCLA impede SDSU from joining the PAC-12 due to their hegemony over SoCal in the PAC-12, I'm sure legislators see it as "Well, does San Diego really need another top tier research institution when they already have UCSD?" Now, I think that you could easily argue that yes we do - but you still have to make that argument. The Bay area has Berkeley, UCSF, UC Santa Cruz, Stanford. LA area has UCLA, USC, CalTech. We have... UCSD? Yeah, San Diego could use a second research institution that grants Ph.Ds. But if you expand your view to "colleges in Southern California that grant Ph.D's", then there are a ton of those, and it's easy to see why legislators might be less eager to grant those powers to SDSU.

So, why would they need to change the name of the university just to get more $$? Couldn't they just give them the funds and keep their current name?
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Of course, much of what Newsom does makes little sense to most people.

Of course, much of what Newsom does makes little sense to most people. It's not about just changing the name. The two Cal Poly schools -- SLO and Pomona -- are primarily science and engineering schools. They have an array of programs not available at a typical CSU, such as architecture, construction management, and a host of nationally ranked programs in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering.

With Californi losing population why would we need more of a decreasing commodity. Who will fill those seats? Oh the student from Wuhan Institute of Technology and Virology.

I don't think there's a big demand for Liberal Arts, Communications, Humanities and/or Art History degrees any more. Hence the STEM education focus. Science Technology Engineering Mathematics

So, the way things are changed almost daily could not those programs be relegated or included into Humbolt State system with out all the red tape? If, Cal Poly can have those programs couldn't some instuctors and leaders of them transfer to Humbolt St. and start a program there? You would, of course, ask them first and allow them the opportunity to decide for themselves. It can be done. I know how the state works.

A 76 billion budget surplus? How about refunding it to the tax payers? Can't do that, the bull$#!+ Train is calling. Need to shove more money down that hole to get those people in Modesto, Merced and Lodi on the fast track to nowhere and take twice the money and time to do it.

The longer people fight and stall progress, the more it costs. Yes, progress. High speed trains are way more efficient than airplanes for regional travel. Some people fight everything and when they win, you don't have Balboa Parks or San Diego States or efficient infrastructure.

Did they ever get their football program back? They have a really sweet hang that was profiled in (I think?) SI about 20 years ago. Just gorgeous with redwoods all around it viewable from inside the stadium. Of course, I think it was Cal that used their facilities this past season when the Bay Area shut down. Anyway, it's sort of a bucket list stadium for me to see a game in if I'm ever up that way.

My wife went to school there and I always though that the the Football Team should have come out to "The Lumberjack" by Jackyl - www.youtube.com/watch?v=A52p9jc-gOo - the dude actually 'plays' a chainsaw as a musical instrument in the song!
