Actually I think it's the opposite of that. From a conference-wide perspective, increased ratings and national exposure, which those starts yield, is much more valuable than ticket & concession revenue. Eyeballs > butts in seats, and that's been the formula for several years now. Over the past 2 years, including pre-pandemic 2019, the P12 has found that 9 AM ratings nearly double late night ratings, which is when many of these games would be shown. While the schools may hate drawing the short straw & getting the game, for the better good of the conference it's not a bad thing. IMO the core fans will always make the effort to show for the game and season ticket holders are typically already financially committed (most buy tickets before start times are even announced), so the drop in attendance (while still a lot) isn't that big of a financial hit. It sucks for fans, but so do 7/7:30 PM kicks which is the other primary window. For many, I think driving to the game at 7 AM isn't that much worse than driving home at 11 PM. IMO that game really sucks for SDSU fans this year for 2 reasons - 1) our stadium is 2 hours away (15-30 minutes would be less of an issue), and 2) SDSU basketball plays on the same day (a little later). But at least the early start will give fans a chance to watch/attend both football & hoops, even though Saturday would have been MUCH better than Black Friday. I don't like it, but I get it, and I don't expect it to go by the wayside even though coaches may fight it. Doubling viewership isn't a bad thing. Start the games at 12:30 and 4.Not even concerned about going to SDSU games this year--it doesn't matter what time they start (except I will be in Las Vegas in November for SDSU vs UNLV). My next SDSU home game will be just that. A home game. In Mission Valley. Those windows are extremely limited - that's maybe 2 games MAX, if that, each week out of all the game the conference plays, and that assumes that Fox/CBSSN even has any MWC games slotted for that time frame. Most of those starts are slotted for eastern or midwestern conference games. As it stands right now we only have 2 games all year in those 2 timeslots & 1 of them is on a streaming network (Stadium) & not a broadcast station like CBSSN or Fox.

9am after Thanksgiving. WTF? That means players need to be at the stadium at 6am. I have never heard of a football game starting at 9am, even in Pop Warner. That's because Pop Warner game times aren't controlled by TV networks.

Remember the Missouri game years ago that was moved to 10am because of a Padre conflict. It seemed freakish to be watching football in person at that hour. But now, because of TV’s importance, I agree morning West Coast kicks are a coming trend. I expected last year’s ASU-USC game to be played in obscurity, but instead it was the talk of the office two days later. My conclusion was that early viewers out here were eager to see a game with western relevance, rather than the usual Syracuse or Army or whoever.
At my last visit to the Experience Center, one of the guys advised me to pick my seats with an eye to where the sun would be. I asked if we wouldn’t still have mostly late kickoffs, but he said the department is expecting to be playing more day games within a few years. “Get used to putting on sunscreen,” he said.
