The other two teams will finally play each other. They play seven games in a nine-game stretch starting Friday. The Padres could open up a sizeable margin on both teams or a huge margin on one team by winning.
These games are huge if one of the two teams can take five games out of the seven. In 1998 the Padres swept the Giants in back-to-back four-game Series right before the All-Star break. If the Giants were five and three in those games they would have won the NL West if everything else remained the same. Head-to-head games are huge.
Winning percentage in games not among each other:
67.8% Padres 64.7% Giants 60.0% Dodgers

The one loss stopped an overall winning streak of 11 games (1 win vs Texas, 3 vs Cincy, 3 vs SF, 2 vs LA, then the first 2 of the 4 game series in SF), and then they won 2 more after that loss.

Thanks for the help, Reds! (sarcasm/head shake) Looks like SF missed a few extra points today.

I had to look it up. We sweep the Giants in back to back 4 game series in 1996. Until those the Giants were our biggest threat but never recovered from those games.

Tonight's game against Cincinnati the Dodgers normal five-day rotation pitcher would be Trevor Bauer. Instead, the Dodgers are starting David Price who hasn't started a game all season. With this slight alteration to their pitching order the Dodgers will pitch Bauer against the Giants twice. Instead of having the position that Dustin may normally filled face the Giants twice. That position in the rotation will not face the Giants. That is a real smart move by the Dodgers.
The Giants on the other hand will have their most questionable slot in their pitching rotation face the Dodgers twice.

They had lost 6 straight games before the first 4-game series with the Padres you speak of, and were already in last place when that series started. They also finished last.

Standings after June 26th (the day before the first of those 4 games series): GB LA 41-37 SD 39-39 2 CO 37-38 2.5 SF 36-39 3.5 Our biggest issue (by far) that season was the Dodgers. The Giants had fallen to last place 4 games before the first 4-game series with the Padres, and the irrelevance of the Giants just grew from then on, as the Giants solidified their hold on last place from June 23rd on.

I obviously remembered some of the details incorrectly but all four teams in the National League West were neck-and-neck all season until the Padres swept 2 four-game series from the Giants. I'm afraid that is what's going to happen this year with the Dodgers doing much damage to the Giants in the current seven games. That was the point I was making. Hopefully the Giants can split the four games in LA.

The Giants will fall back to earth, and the Dodgers and Padres will fight it out.
