.375/.400/.542 in July thus far; if he can keep up anything close to that we should be very happy! I don't have an issue with Kim/Profar giving him a rest now & then, especially against tougher lefties, but until he reverts back to June Hosmer I'm happy with him in the line-up. Re: the bases loaded situation last night, he has a 1.167 OPS with the bases loaded on the season; he's also hitting .315/.366/.489 (.856 OPS) with RISP on the season. More often than not he's dialed in when it really matters. Exactly what I've been saying. His batting average with RISP is what I like about him. He tends to come thru in those moments, and I think that gets overlooked by some on here. That's obviously a VERY important stat. If only we had a comprehensive stat that measured this (and all of the other stats) to determine his actual value over the course of a season....Oh, wait, we do!

Joey Gallo has been on an absolute HEATER lately. I think he has 10 jacks just in the last two weeks, and a 1.000 OPS. I will be curious to see if a bad, rebuilding TX teams deals him. What might it cost Preller? Let's assume CJ Abrams and Hassell are untouchable. Gore, Campusano, and ______ ? (If they desire Gore. Who knows) Thoughts? He only has one year of control remaining. Yes, I am aware. Hence the question on what posters might think it would cost to get him. You can look at how much time is left to control, but you also have to factor in the competition for him. A number of teams are going to be interested. Buyers get him for the rest of 2021, and all of 2022. He isn't going to be cheap.

The team control left is the only thing I really look at, given it's impossible to weigh the team dynamics and how other front offices view particular players. He's not worth a top 50 prospect given how little control remains, from a future value perspective. He's going to want to test free agency, given his age. I don't think he'll necessarily be cheap, but I wouldn't trade Campusano for him. Weathers is something I would explore, but that'd be the peak.

You're fixated on one specific split statistic, over and over and over and over again. It's the same antiquated song and dance. You're talking about 92 at-bats this season. Who. Cares. 92 at-bats does not in any way, shape or form outweigh the rest of his season or the rest of his Padre career. He's great with runners in scoring position. Cool. In Philadelphia, that three run double? The game was already decided. The Padres were ahead by 4 runs. Context, context, context. Last night, after two walks and a pitcher on the mound with more balls than strikes, he saw four pitches. All were out of the zone, nowhere close to being strikes. He swung at three of them and ended up stranding the bases loaded.....when it was still actually relevant. -0.5 WAR. 92 wRC+. He's the only first baseman in baseball among 22 qualifiers to have a negative WAR ranking. That's all encompassing, including his runners in scoring position numbers. From a pure statistical perspective, he would have to be absolutely elite (.300+ in all situations, power, baserunning for the position, etc) to be a net win. We're nowhere close to that. "Consistent at the level he is now" is an albatross and the worst first baseman in the major leagues. Worst defensively, worst offensively. Can we root for him to get better? Sure. Is there anything anywhere to indicate that that's possible? No, not really. He doesn't hit the ball on the barrel with any frequency, has no ability to loft the ball and has repeatedly refused to tinker with the swing long enough to enact any meaningful change. A .260/.315/.400 slash line with far below average defense at first base is not a tenable situation.

Also, you can pick out any guy and say, "Well sure, he got that hit when it didn't matter," etc.... I completely understand his downfalls and that he's not worth his contract, etc... I simply want him to continue to stay at the pace that he's currently at, and keep up the good average with RISP. Nothing wrong with that. He's here to stay for the time being, so let's root him on. Go Pads!!!

And yes, there is a lot wrong with this line of thinking. You can root for mediocrity, I guess. I will not.

And, that's what makes the world go around, or so they say. It's just part of what makes baseball so much fun.

The fact he has yet another team-friendly (arbitration) year on his contract is the very fact that will make him more expensive than a 3-month rental. You're going to have to give up less for the latter, and IMO the upside to Gallo this year won't outweigh the added cost. Even if you include his value next year, when we may lose Pham, but personally I'd rather have Pham reupped at $8M than Gallo at about the same price. Unless the Rangers bend over & take it, or take Hosmer/Myers in a trade, personally I wouldn't want to give up anything of real value in the pipeline & I don't see the Rangers taking anything less than an upper tier prospect for a player who has a team-friendly contract.

I'm choosing to focus on the here and now, and you take exception to that. That's your trip. Hosmer's average with RISP is very good, and you can TRY to downgrade it all you want. If all he's doing for now on the plus side, is saving errors on scoops and driving in runs at a 300 or better average clip, I'll take it. He's on a good roll right now, and I'm riding it for as long as possible since it helps the Padres. Try not to be blinded with disdain towards Hosmer so much, and hope that he can continue his current pace. We need him to do well while he's here.

This has been a normal exchange...the first seventeen times. But when someone says the same (incorrect) things over and over, I'll disagree. And it's bizarre to get fixated on one thing, to defend a player like Hosmer. Is what it is, I suppose.

There's zero wrong with hoping Hosmer can contribute in a good way for the rest of the season, and he's been showing signs of it. I get it, you won't budge an inch and you're convinced he won't. I happen to not think that way. Like I said, rigid. You're right, it is what it is.

You're fixated on one silly metric that represents less than a third of his plate appearances this season, like it somehow overrides the rest of his profile....and again, it doesn't. That's not some kind of attack against Hosmer or you, it's just the truth. Do I want him to be better? Of course, because that would help the team. There's no actual proof of it happening, though. Win the game.

I want Hosmer to keep hitting the way he has been lately and his overall play in general, keeping his average with RISP (which is obviously a VERY important stat) at a good clip, keep digging out balls thrown in the dirt, saving errors, etc.... All of this obviously helps the Padres. I'm hoping he continues what he's doing right now Ryan. Is that all that bad? Sheesh.
