Joe Musgrove, the most unlikely - but totally appropriate given his hometown (El Cajon) - pitcher to throw the Padres' first ever No Hitter!

53 years without a no-no. Historic moment for the Padres and San Diego sports.
So great that when it finally happened, it was a San Diego kid. Wow.
1 HBP from being a PERFECT game. But it's perfect enough for this lifetime Padres' fan.

I've been waiting over 50 years for this. FINALLY!!! What a masterful performance. Only blemish was the hit batter. No walks, 10 strike outs. Amazing!!!

About time! I've seen so many near misses, and I've seen the Pads get no-hit way more than I should have. Musgrove has been on fire so far this season.

My late father and I were at the game where Steve Arlin came within a strike of getting a no-hitter. I never, ever thought it would be another 50 years before a Padres pitcher would FINALLY get that last out. IIRC, we were also the last team to have never had a player hit for the cycle, until Kemp did it in Colorado.
Better late than never!!

I was about to correct you and say that was Clay Kirby, but it was indeed Steve Arlin, who was later one of my best friend's dentist here in SD. Clay was simply the first near-miss: www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/story/2019-05-15/padres-near-no-hitters-curse-of-clay-kirby-preston-gomezThe Padres have been horrible for so many years, but I have lots of great memories growing up rooting for them thru thin and thinner. I still can't believe I was a Jr Padre for $1/game (or was it $1 for all 11 games?) I used to wear that horrible smelling plastic Padre warm-up jacket to school all the time - the one they gave out for free before one of the games. I was also there for the last bat day they ever had before they had to stop giving them out, due to a few people using them as weapons on each other.

Do you guys remember, as the announcer of the game would say, "Number 11 little Enzo (pause) Hernandezzzzzz!!!! I loved that as a kid.
I once looked up his phone number in the big phone book, (remember those?) and there it was!!! That's how it was back then, no problem having your number in the phone book and not private, especially when you're a player of Enzo's caliber. Good fielder, not a great hitter.

Sure doesn't look like No-No Joe right now.
Ugh. Reds pounding him hard in the first inning … Scored 4 runs. 37 pitches and slider is MIA.
Padres are going to have to do a lot better than they did last night with runners in scoring position if they want to get back into this one … and Joe is going to have to bear down. Don't need another bullpen game tonight, but they might just get one anyway.
Whew! Grisham's 5th inning SLAM came at the PERFECT time. Let 'em call it now. Padres win…

Baseball's a funny game. He's pitched a LOT better in losses, but things do tend to balance out. In fairness, the 1st batter of the game should have been a K & the 2nd hitter barely made contact but got a single. One bad pitch later & it's 3-0 instead. Funny to think Musgrove saved the bullpen with his performance today! : )

Musgrove getting pounded again in the second inning … a good way to lose a ball game. 55 pitches to get out of two innings.
I don't think he's gonna get rescued by a grand salami tonight, either.
