Tonight's outing, in the 9-8 loss to Albuquerque--Gore threw 77 pitches in 3.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 1 BB and 4 K's. El Paso did have a lead when Gore was pulled, but the BP gave it up later. I didn't see the game, but it sounded like the defense and some soft contact didn't help his cause. Still curious as to why he isn't in San Antonio.

Or just notice that he had a 2.66 FIP, which indicates an actual MLB defense likely makes most of the plays behind him. Center fielder misjudged a ball, a couple of bloop hits. Welcome to the PCL.

Ok. Not good, but not as bad as the stat line looks. I get it. A 2.66 FIP is excellent. His ERA was 10 runs higher. I'd ask what's closer to reality...and what's a truer indication of actual good pitching (It's not ERA)...I'm still curious as to why Gore isn't in San Antonio in a more pitching friendly environment. Interesting decision by the organization to put him in the PCL. Edit : Just reminded myself of the quarantine procedure. That's why he's in El Paso.

ERA in one or two starts isn't a true indicator of good or bad pitching. But are we going to pretend it's NOT a good indicator over the long term?
Come on.......

In a general, overall manner, sure. Like Jacob deGrom's stupid good. With regards to the minors, no. ERA is subjected to a host of variables, first and foremost...it's based on an official scorer making a judgment call on plays. (See any Colorado series in Coors...ever?) The reason why FIP exists is because it removes the subjectivity from that process. "Fielding Independent Pitching" takes away the element of bad defense (which Gore has suffered from tremendously, unfortunately) and puts the onus on how well a pitcher's actually throwing with an assumed good defense behind him. That's not to say he isn't throwing the ball tremendously right now, with the command issues still being present. The mechanics of his delivery are problematic right now in terms of being able to produce a good fix.

I prefer it to ERA everywhere, outside of the most obvious cases.

I found this response from Dennis Lin interesting, in yesterdays Athletic mailbag.
--- What are the organization’s feelings on MacKenzie Gore? — Alex W.
"The Padres still believe he can become a frontline starter, in part because they have seen him overcome a rough year before. In 2018, Gore was derailed by blister problems. Then, in 2019, he logged a 1.02 ERA in the hitter-friendly California League, re-emerging as one of baseball’s elite pitching prospects.
This past year, however, has sowed some doubt in the minds of talent evaluators. Gore’s command problems have been pronounced, and he does not possess overpowering stuff. Some scouts now view him as a mid-rotation starter, not a future No. 1. The Padres still lean toward the latter outcome, in part because he only recently resumed pitching in real minor-league games. Citing Gore’s hyper-competitive nature, team officials say losing a year of development hurt the left-hander more than it did most prospects. They also believe Gore will be pitching for the big-league team soon, possibly before the All-Star break. "

Gore, on Friday night: 40 pitches, 21 strikes. Was the starter, but didn't get out of the 2nd inning. 1.1 IP, 4 hits, 6 runs (2 earned), 2 BB, 1 K, 3 HR. Defense behind him didn't help much either, as El Paso committed 3 errors while Gore was pitching.

Apparently another hard thrower who needs to learn how to pitch and isn't having much luck doing so.
I wonder how much longer he'll remain at the top of the heap - at some point, potential needs to become practical.
