would not say Zeigler stole the comment about Nathan's development - it was a combination of the answer Dutcher gave to Zeigler's question about Nathan . If Ziegler said what you said he said in the interview, those were the exact words Dutch used (saw him go from A to B to C player to a A to C player). Sounds to me like he's just quoting Dutch, which is fine.

Zeigler was at the Press Conference and also was at the practice - so do think he could make the comment . Especially since it was he who asked the question about Nathan . Zeigler also made some other positive comments about last year's team . How our staff was able to make a variety of distinctive defensive adjustments during games last year . Not easy to do unless you have knowledgeable experienced players and coaches that can convey those specific adjustments on the fly rather then strictly at half time .
Zeigler also made some comments on Matt - sees him as a much more complete player - realizes that it is more important to assist the team in a variety of areas not just in scoring . He is about the same size as last year and now is able to let the game come to him rather then force things and may do even more things that enable team mates to be better players . Team should have very good leadership with him and Jordan S . Plus Trey and even Gomez as he learns to fit in on both offense and defense . Will be interesting how Trey handles the offense as a starting PG and Gomez the defense - not easy to pick up - especially high quality teams that we will face early . Some true tests
Zeigler does see this as the most difficult OOC opponents the Aztecs have ever had to play against - especially without the usual easier opponents or having X games or controlled scrimmages . He also thinks the first part of our MW schedule is very challenging . With early games against CSU( very experienced teams) and UNLV( good team , good coach and two of the better newer players in the MW) two of the perceived better teams in the conference . First half of the MW looks much tougher then the last half - but very interesting last two games of the MW with BSU picked for second place .

I'd be surprised if we don't play a couple OOC games that are considerably less rigorous.

He was perfect as the #3 guard but one of the biggest issues he had was being so passive with shooting. Then at Vegas, he went crazy and his 18 points pretty much won the game for us. I thought that would change his outlook but he went right back to always passing and rarely looking for his shot. Seiko was guilty of that too. I know that we'll have a lot of offensive weapons at our disposal but to keep the defense honest and avoid a 5-on-4 look, they have to look for their shot more. Oh yeah, and they have to make it too. But iff those two continue those bad habits, I think we'll see more of Butler sooner rather than later.

Yeah I completely agree, their passive play was hidden because they were the #3 and #4 guard, and they could provide more aggressive play in spurts. We need them to step up this year.

When you're on the floor with Flynn, KJ, Matt and/or Jordan you should be passive when it comes to taking shots. Those are the guys you want scoring. Now, without Flynn & KJ, the mix is different so he should be more aggressive. But I'd still expect Matt, Jordan & Gomez to put up the majority of our shots which is exactly what we want. With experience, confidence & an expanded role comes aggression. But he'll always be a pass-first guard, which is perfect given our roster.

His play on the offensive end is exploitable in conference play. His lack of desire to find his own shot wasn't an issue last year because he people were focused on stopping Flynn and KJ. When teams see us multiple times, watch film on us multiple times, it will come up if he doesn't keep teams honest by occasionally pulling up for shots when he's open. He can't always spend 10 seconds setting up a teammate, especially in shot clock situations. I suspect the ball will not be in his hands that often when the shot clock is low unless he becomes more aggressive this year. I mean, that's fine since we have Mitchell and Gomez for those spots, but it is a liability when your starter takes forever to set up teammates and doesn't shoot open pull up shots, no matter how you frame it.

This isn't the same mix of players, which had another ball heavy PG on the floor. 2 others at times. This isn't his 1st year playing D1. You're making a lot of assumptions based on being a 1st year player, rather than looking at what he's capable of doing. If he's left open he'll take the shot, but his goal is to get the best shooters/scorers the ball in the best position to do so. He's good at it. That will always be the priority. if it takes 8-10 seconds, so what. If the outcome is a good look that's all that matters. And it doesn't mean he won't take open looks when presented. Trey was much better in conference play than non-conference, and for a reason. He had to adapt. His eFG% was 52.8%, and he shot 40% from outside. Yes, limited attempts, but his offensive efficiency was terrific when on the floor (1.06 PPP). Much better than KJ's. He's not taking 25% of our shots like a Flynn or Matt, or even Gomez & Matt this year. I can see him taking around 15-17% of the shots when on the floor (vs. 12% last year), but more importantly his objective is to maintain that 2:1 assist to TO ratio, but at a higher volume.

would agree it all depends on who you are on the floor with . Last year when Trey was on the court with Malachi , Matt , ,Yanni , Jordan they were the go to shooters - his main job was be a facilitator same goes for Adam S . They both knew their roles - make all their team mates better scorers and players - do what they needed to do so the Team got the W .. If they really had an open shot then they took it .
An Area of concern is being a better FT % and of course not TO's the ball . Could also add rebounder . Both Malachi and KJ were good rebounders and defenders. As Zeigler pointed out It is totally different story when you a starter . From the opening tip off , rather then seeing the game develop from the bench then come in. If Trey is the PG that could mean Gomez the Shooting guard and do think he will take the shot - How well they handle their positions will not know until they get the opportunities . Would guess that the guards could be by committee this year - doubt any guard gets the amount of minutes Malachi or KJ got last year . This year we have a wide variety of styles and skills at the guard position key is using them .
Not saying either guard is X or DJ but they also adjusted their game after team mates were gone or the need to .
Dutcher did comment that he does have the opportunity to add a couple of OOC games . Either add a quality team if that option opens up with a team not getting the game they had expected then do to Covid .... or be able to add a local team or 2 when he feels the team may need it most during the schedule . He will keep his options open.
Do think think Zeigler attends practices and also assists a local HS team so he does know his stuff . Believe the phrase you used was " he stole " the comment

New year, new opportunities! I'm excited to see him and the rest of the team out on the floor soon, and see what they are capable of. The future is bright with this team.

Believe the phrase you used was " he stole " the comment You said HE made the statement, not that he quoted Dutch. If he made the statement without quoting Dutch, despite the fact the statement came directly from Dutch, yes, he stole the statement. Not sure why you can't grasp that? DUTCH made the statement. You keep harping on that the observation came from Zeigler. It didn't. He was quoting Dutch.

Not sure what you are so upset about . Zeigler usually attends and watches practices . Also knows the X's and O's about basketball . He usually chats with the coaches and makes comments that may include his and the coaches opinions or both. Maybe Dutcher and Zeigler talked about it . . I have no idea .
. More importantly he tries to provide the information for all of Us Fans . It was a good explanation of the advancement Nathan is making . Dutcher did have a Press about it using the explanation .
I heard the radio interview before I heard Dutcher's Press .
If you are Dutcher's agent and want the credit there it is - just hope you do not file a grievance or take it to court
Bottom line it was good news to hear about Nathan

Both guards in front of him were supposed to be as well as Mitchell, Wetzell and Schakel. But he had a nice drive and floater in the lane type of game. I expect him to be a bit more involved in scoring this year simply because he doesn't not have Flynn and Feagin on the team but if he is used to set up guys like Mitchell, Schakel, Gomez and whomever steps up in the front court he doesn't have to score points to be effective.

This is not an isolated incident. With this, Pullman has now been added to the all-time Aztecs misspelled list. The team:
Coach: Steve Fischer
C: Brian Carwell F: Kahwi Leonard F: Winston Shepherd, G: Jeremy Helmsley G: Trey Pullman
Welcome Trey!

Never have been. All I've said is Zeigler quoted Dutch, and that there's nothing wrong with that. Your the one bent out of shape thinking Zeigler came up with the observation on his own. Again, you said (referring to Zeigler): " In his opinion Nathan used to have to be able to take step A and then think about doing step B and then step C .Step by step . Now he is able to go from A to C without hesitation". That's not his opinion; that's him quoting Dutch from the earlier press conference virtually word for word. Zeigler actually credits Dutch in his article, something you apparently struggle with. Again, nothing wrong with that. It's his job to quote the HC. One of the things I love about Dutch is he's very quotable and also very honest when talking to fans & the press. And yes, anything good about Nathan is good news. He & Arop could be stars if they can ever stay healthy for a full year, but both have been haunted by injuries since they got here. Hopefully that's not the case this year. We'll be very, very good if both stay healthy for once.

I think the fact Pulliam was selected along with Jordan to speak at the pre-UCLA presser says a lot about him as well. Think he'll take on a leadership role & be the main ball handler. I really liked what I heard about Butler as well - gives us that 2nd true PG who's capable of stepping in, most likely as the 10th man.

I'm curious to see if Mitchell goes off for 20+ tomorrow. They are going to get lit up from outside if they don't stay close to their man on defense, if Gomez doesn't do it to them Schakel surely will, and Mitchell is very good at winning in isolation looks. I predict that we win either with a barrage of 3's, or Mitchell going off for 20+
