I’m not sure a nuclear war could change life as quickly as the technology I got to see in a demo. It is called GPT-3. It was made by OpenAI, a Silicon Valley start-up co-founded by Elon Musk. Microsoft has leased the technology with exclusive use and the code is closed reportedly because Microsoft is concerned about the societal impact of releasing it. It is an AI that understands language. I know on the surface that doesn’t sound like a world ender, but this software can create and write. It can write computer code. It can create websites. It can write articles, poetry, and screenplays. It can write college papers or science papers or legal documents. It can invent photorealistic images from nothing more than a brief description. It can mimic any historical figure or it can mimic you in chat if it can read your chat history. Anything you do professionally that involves language, it can probably do it in a fraction of a second for pennies worth of electricity and work 24 hours a day without ever taking a day off. As it stands today, it is not perfect. The capabilities of GPT-3 are mind blowing, but it isn’t yet better than human. The problem is that it is 10 times better than the previous generation of AI language engines, and that previous generation came out 8 months ago. The technology has become 10 times better in only 250 days and there is no reason to believe the pace of technological advancement will slow. If you’d like to see some of what GPT-3 can do, these guys do a pretty good breakdown of the technology: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te5rOTcE4J4
