If there is no tailgating do we lose the student body that attends games? Some of my best college experiences (and loss of memory) were tailgating before the games. I don’t remember much of the games but it sure was a good time. It could be the end of the student experience but maybe not. I know we went more for the drinking, barbecue, cornhole, tail, etc. and football was somewhere in there.

The UT’s Nick Canepa says when COVID hit, the city stopped all maintenance of the stadium. The place was crumbling like an ancient Roman ruin. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/story/2020-10-03/column-its-easy-to-blame-city-for-all-this-rotten-stadium-business-because-it-isI had speculated SDCCU has become unplayable. Seeing that, an engineer who knows the layout tells me the stadium’s structural concrete is deteriorating via corrosion and it would be an “endless Band-Aid project. … The cancer had set in. It’s a sick puppy.” The city just let it all go to hell. So I wasn’t surprised when I asked Aztecs Athletic Director J.D. Wicker why he prefers Carson this season. “The city basically stopped taking care of the stadium once the coronavirus hit,” he said (although repair has been lax for 30 years). “It would have required us to invest a lot of money in the building. So it’s cost effective for us to go on with demolition sooner.

And in some of the pictures that have been posted showing the site under construction, there was one video (In the "So...construction cam?" thread) that did a flyover of the stadium, and it showed the field. The field had been browning nicely, except for a green spot on one of the sidelines.

The $#!+ Show will start as soon as people start seeing ticket prices for the new stadium, and then realize there's no tailgating either....The days of cheap Aztec football experience are over. Don't get me wrong, I want a new stadium as sdccu is a complete dump. I just think it's going to be interesting since most Aztec fans I know are cheap... No tailgating? With all that green grass that the only enforcement can be no fires? How are they going to stop someone from tailgating? And if there is a fear of losing it, isn't it upon the fans to start talking now about logistics for tailgating with the heads of Aztec Club, the Alumni Board, and the athletic department? Silence won't solve your concerns. Obviously it will be less space, but The Grove is 10 acres, and we would need maybe a quarter of that total. Also, on the SDSU Mission Valley site is this photo below. I point your attention to west of the stadium, looks like there is some area identified. Perhaps we should verify throughout the construction of its continued tailgate designation. Yes, tickets are going to be more expensive. We all knew it, we should not be surprised. I am very curious to see the non-premium prices, and lowest priced tickets. With the seating being vastly improved, I am going to wait to see those prices before I make a decision. I was told that the only tailgating spot(s) that will be available would ONLY be available for PREMIUM buyers...i.e. Skybox owners. This was from the President of the Aztec Club. I told him if no tailgating for "regular" season ticket holders, I'd probably not go to games anymore...nor most of our tailgating crew which is 20ish people.

Tailgating doesn't seem to be a problem if they are using the large grassy areas just west of the stadium. But, I'm more concerned about parking. With a stadium which is supposed to hold 35,000, just where is there room to park about 12-15K in autos? Doesn't look like the streets to the east of the stadium will hold very many.

Probably means taking the trolley😲 I hear you, and that probably means parking at the main campus (about 5 miles east), and going on the trolley to the stop where it is currently on the property. May not be too popular with fans, if they wish to bring all their gear for tailgating/bar-b-ques. Seems to me they should have thought about doing something else like making room for parking even if it meant several levels of parking garages on the site. Or, do they have that in their plans?

SDSU West plans call for "6,000 parking spaces for public and game-day use...". I don't know if the tailgate lots will be considered part of those 6,000 spaces. I thought SDSU previously said something about parking structures, but I don't know for sure.

I can’t tell which of these structures would be parking garages. Maybe North along Friars road. Anyone else catch anything I am missing?

Wondering if we sdsu owns parking lot across friers rd? I would guess the city does, as it is outside the boundaries of what will become SDSU West.

Wondering if we sdsu owns parking lot across friers rd? Parking Garage? Nice place for people using uber or lyft along with shuttle vans and or bus drop offs and or pick-ups. The location is close to the stadium with direct access to friars road. The elevation and placement would need some type of Pedestrian Walkway or walkover bridge that would lend its self for some big time advertising, it could be one of the statement points of the project. Just an idea for the future

Whatever model is put into place at SDSU West, tailgating will be very different (& inevitably reduced) compared to what everyone here is used to. That's unavoidable & inevitable, period.
How does tailgating work for Padres games? My hunch is that it will be somewhat similar at SDSU West.
This will be a big change, folks will just have to adapt. The notion of stadiums with infinite acres of pavement available for unlimited tailgating is going away all across the country.

I know I am going to offend some tailgaters...but maybe everyone will actually make it inside the stadium for games now.

Aztecarita tailgates get wild and crazy, for sure, but in our history we are proud to state that we (AzDick and I) have NEVER missed a kick/tip off...can't say the same for AztecNails though

I was wondering if they are going to use C-2 and C-3 for their parking structures, and 6,000 spaces doesn't sound like very much even if you consider 4 people per vehicle? Because that only adds up to 24,000 fans. So, are the rest expected to just show up by the trolley or walk in? Hope they are not underestimating what will happen during game times.

C-2 and C-3 are what I was thinking as well. However, I can’t confirm. I wonder if Clark has put the architectural plans online so we can see. Also, I wonder how much things can change from the original plans. It is possible they are going to have parking underground but that gets very expensive to build. I am trying to potentially bid with my company on a small part of this project. It may provide me some of these answers we are considering.

That would be soo cool to be involved in something like this. Being able to watch an Aztecs game and say "I helped build this"

The Padres are developing that entire area, with groundbreaking on the project scheduled for 2023.
