Probably the key factor in the decision was that nobody was going to volunteer to plunge the 100+ toilets that were probably plugged up in The Murph/Q/SDCCU. I don't blame 'em - let the wrecking ball take care of that shite.

Before I commit to giving SDSU more money I would like to know how much I would have to "donate" to keep myself in line for the new stadium. If I understand the emails correctly it said if I pay the per seat donation amount (not ticket amount) then I'm OK. I can't attend games in Carson as I work on Saturdays and taking Option 1 and handing over boatloads of money isn't financially doable. I would also like to know the cost per seat in the new stadium before handing over what would amount to a blank check. Hard to make decisions when the figures aren't available. I'm already near the top of my financial threshold for tickets, nearing retirement with it's lesser income and getting crankier at dealing with crowds. After 40 years of having season tickets I might just relegate myself to being a TV fan and attend just a game or two in person, kind of like I do for basketball. Call the ticket office and/or the Aztec Club. They can tell you how much, if any, you'll need to donate to keep your place in line for this year and next. They can't tell you what your tickets will cost because that hasn't been determined yet. You can be pretty well guaranteed that comparable location tickets will cost you more in the new stadium, assuming you've already got tickets in a good location. Suitable seats might be available for about the same cost but, no one knows yet. I fully expect that I won't be keeping my 50 yard line seats in the new stadium. By the end of this year, or fairly early next year they should be ready to announce seat prices and I'll be able to decide just how far down the sidelines I'll be willing to move. I guarantee that I'll be spending more than I am now, just like my basketball seats went up when we moved from the Sports Arena to the new on campus arena.

I guarantee that I'll be spending more than I am now, just like my basketball seats went up when we moved from the Sports Arena to the new on campus arena. Very good points! We have been so spoiled for so long with very inexpensive ticket prices for our main sports. There was a pretty significant price increase for basketball and I took one for the team as I couldn’t leave my crew that has been sitting together for what seems like an eternity. I hated to almost triple my prices but that is the cost of success. We want to roll with the big boys then we gotta pay and I don’t think we can have it both ways. Football has been incredibly successful the last decade and all we have been saying is build us a stadium that we can call our own. Well, it happened and so many of us are just so excited. We new the football stadium was gonna be pricey and tickets were gonna skyrocket as we still have to pay for it. Again, we can’t have it both ways but to have our basketball and football tickets go so high just in the last few years is a tough pill to swallow. It is almost to the point we gotta pick one or the other as momma bear gets mad at all the money I spend on Aztec sports. 😂 I feel for the life long fans who have been going to games forever, attended when we were at our worst, still cheered and sat through some horrible football. Now, some of these fans are on fixed incomes and can’t afford these new prices. I wish there was something that could be done to help these 25+ year season ticket holders on fixed incomes to secure their seats for a certain period of time. I don’t know the answer but I feel for these folks who have been such great fans and potentially might be squeezed out with the new prices. I applaud you folks because without you this may have never happened.

In almost every case comparable location seats were twice as expensive, even without being in a new stadium. Basketball was the same.
Lucky for me my wife has no problems with me spending money on Aztec tickets. She doesn't like football, but loves to come to the basketball games whenever our son can't make it. I don't drink (much), smoke or chase women (other than her) so she's happy to allow me this one vice.
I'm one of those fans you describe in your third paragraph, except fortunately I'm able to afford the prices. Even so, I will have to balance the cost with the quality of the seats. I want as good a seat as possible so I'll pay more than I really want to, just like basketball, but I'll be there regardless.

I'd be curious to see that, because I've heard quite the opposite. In just a 2 minute search on 3 sites I see SDSU's range from $149-$511 per seat, compared to CSU at $200-$750, Boise at $158-$874 and Fresno State at $249-$1276. I know they've done a comprehensive search & comparison across both football & basketball & found our ticket prices were lower than most in football, and comparable to the better programs in basketball even after the March price increase (& were lower than the top programs prior to that). This from Zeigler's article on the basketball ticket increase: "Season-ticket prices remain similar to other top programs in the Mountain West. New Mexico was slightly higher this season for a sideline seat 15 rows above the floor; UNLV and Nevada were slightly lower." (than SDSU’s $1,750 price for comparable seats) Football has long been a very good value.

Coug, you guys are saying the same thing... AzTex was saying that the *other schools'* prices were ~2x as expensive, and that all Aztec fans have been needing to prepare themselves for a significant change in pricing towards the mainstream... and away from the ridiculously cheap tix we've had for years (decades?).

My comparison of basketball ticket prices around the conference were before the latest price increase, which were substantial for the best seats. In your examples above the difference in the top prices ranged from almost 50% to 70% to 150% higher. My double might not apply to every one or every price range, but the difference in most cases is still significant. I'm involved in a project right now and don't have the time or energy to redo the research or look through all my old posts.

Just to be clear, are you saying SDSU's ticket prices ARE a good value or are NOT a good value compared to the rest of the league? I'm still not clear from what you're saying. I don't think there's any doubt they are for football, and as mentioned in Zeigler's article, even with the price increase basketball is on par with the better programs in the MWC. Given the product we've seen on the field & the court, plus given the cost of living here in SD compared to the other areas, I think its fair to say we should be priced towards the higher end. As long as it's not outrageous.

As long as it's not outrageous. Sorry for not being clear enough. That's one of the limitations of written communications. Our ticket prices are a great value compared to most of the other members of our conference, especially the more successful ones. The basketball tickets that just had the big increase are much more in line with the more successful teams in the conference but the tickets that didn't get as large of increase are still a very good value in comparison.
Football has been a HUGE value, again compared to the more successful teams, like we have been. With the new stadium we probably will be on par, if not a little higher than the top teams in the conference. No surprise.
I'm sure most of us will think the prices are outrageous, like we did when the basketball arena was first completed. Everyone thinks prices are too high except for what they charge others. I still believe I get good value for my money. Aztec games are almost always the highlight of my week unless we lose. Then it's misery and despair until the next game.

I would expect football to be on par or close to CSU, and still stay below Boise. But definitely among the top 4 in the conference, which is where we should be IMO.

I would add sometimes I question the value of my basketball tickets. I use to be red and now I am in some other color that is even more expensive. Hell, I don’t even know how much the price has gone up the last few years. I stopped looking and just charge the AM EX. However, I like the people in my area and we have all been sitting together for what seems like forever. I do expect them to start dropping at some point because some are on fixed incomes. Anyways, I love the product and school but I question the value because of the competition we bring to the stadium. That is my frustration with the prices we pay. If we are going to charge what UNLV or New Mexico charges we should get similar opponents. They seem to get better teams year after year and I don’t need sdcoug to list them out and year after year and show metrics or anything else. I don’t need to see Pt Loma, St Kats, or CSU San Marcos. We should have 2-3 or 4 good OOC opponents each year.

I tend to agree that the prices are fair but the quality opponents and quantity of games has been limited in, while the donation benefits have also dropped. The games are still very fun and I haven’t questioned my desire to renew. I don’t like SDSU stopped scheduling UCSB, Long Beach etc. They allowed for competitive games which made for a better experience. I think football is great value and was basketball. Basketball is still worth the money.
