Property of SDSC.
Love it! Always good to see these old school videos and reminders of our tradition. The beginnings of the Great Saint Coryell.

Loved seeing this. It was from the middle of my years at State. Note to the youngsters here. Regarding the mention of losing 17 lettermen. In those days, with very few exceptions, all our players were Junior College transfers. We probably didn't have more than 40 on the entire roster. So, while 17 was a huge loss, we always lost half the team to graduation anyway. When the NCAA put in limits on the number of players on scholarships it didn't really affect us because we were well short of the limit anyway.

Great footage. I suspect though that the commentary was dubbed in recently. That voice sounds awfully familiar, and no scratchy sound as you'd expect from that era - John Howard perhaps?
Either way, that was a bit before my time, but I'd love to be able to go back and relive the Coryell era. He sent a lot of players (and coaches) to the NFL, and I bet they'd have given some of the top "D-1" teams a run for their money if given the chance.

I thank you're right about those teams ability to compete with the D-1 teams of the time. The only problem we would have had is with depth. When we did get to play some from what are now the P5 conferences it seemed that our first string was as good or better then theirs. Their second string was noticeably better. Our third string ... wait ... we didn't have a third string. The major teams could often wear us down by the 4th quarter.
There was a time we were trying to get Ohio State of Alabama to come out and play. I understand they were offered the entire gross gate. That was a big payday back then. They wouldn't play us. I said at the time I don't think they could have stopped our offense.

The long travel for a possibly embarrassing loss may have had something to do with it as well. Too bad they couldn't lure any close by Pac-8 schools at that time. Or did they? Too lazy right now to do the research (plus I'm 'working').

We did play Iowa State in 1970 (lost only 22-28), again in 1971 (lost 31-48) and again in 1972 (won 41-28). Played Oregon St. in 1972 (won 17-8). These were all with Don Coryell as head coach. Played Oregon St. again in 1975 (won 25-0).

It was tough getting 'Big Time' college teams to come out to play us in those years. The year after this video was made we had our first undefeated and untied season under Coryell at 11-0 (1966). That year we went up to San Jose and played the Spartans on their field. They had just played and beaten both CAL & Stanford I believe, and thought they would punch us in the nose since we had not played anybody as good as they had played. They forgot one thing however, we had a very good DC by the name of John Madden who put together a fantastic defensive plan for the Aztecs, and we beat them, 25-0! The Spartans later said that we had a better defense than both Stanford & CAL!

Don't forget the awesome Florida State win, though I do realize that was with Claude Gilbert at the helm. I still remember watching that one on TV, and fans tossing tangerines onto the field after the game, since (I think?) FSU was slated to play in the Tangerine Bowl that year. I remember Bobby Bowden was enthralled with Monty M. throwing the flaming spear into the ground pregame and wanted to bring that tradition back home to their field.

We won the last three games by a combined score of 114-0. However, Long Beach State proved again to be a thorn in our side.

Too lazy right now to do the research (plus I'm 'working'). We got to pay back UOP for the crushing defeat that we suffered from them in 1958. I was at Aztec Bowl with my dad for that game. UOP had a running back named Dick Bass who ran us silly. They scored 68 points on us that day. It seemed like Dick Bass scored every one of them.

I think we paid back UOP with Marshall Faulk running crazy early in his freshman year. I believe it was 386 yards and 7 TDs?

Sports Illustrated sent a reporter to that game to write a feature article about San Jose St. and that quarterback. After our defense stuffed their "great" quarterback and our quarterback, Don Horn, out performed him by a huge margin, the SI article was all about us. That article is still available on the internet. Here is a link to it:

I was keeping my list of power conference teams to the earlier years. The reasons tangerines were being thrown on the field is the rumor around town was that the bowl bid was going to go the the winner. Unfortunately that wasn't true. That was disappointing. That Florida St. game was on of only 2 perfect, or as near to it as a football team is going to get, that I have ever seen the Aztecs play, and I've seen a lot of games.

You could be right, but that never happened unfortunately. We thought playing Utah St. in 1967 was a step up to playing better teams at that time. They were the only team to defeat us in a four year period (1966 to 1969), 31-25 in 1967. We didn't really play a team from a Big conference until 1970 when we played Iowa St. in the final game of the season and lost, 28-22. We played Arizona and won in 1971, but they were still in the WAC then. Our victory over BYU (31-11) happened in 1970. We had two victories over Big schools in 1972. In the opener we beat Oregon St., 17-8 (I saw that one!), and in the final game of the season we finally beat Iowa St., 27-14! We were 10-1 in 1972, but never got a Bowl invite. At that time there were not many bowl games.
