If Central Arkansas can play football the MWC could have played. They missed an opportunity to be the only Western conference to play fall football. That would have meant huge TV exposure. If the AAC can play so could the MWC. Should have been bold but that’s not who the MWC is.

I don't think any of the California schools have even gotten permission to practice yet. Same with New Mexico and Hawaii. That's 5 schools that would not be ready. The mountain schools could have forged ahead but the western schools would have had a tough time. Maybe we could be ready by October, but it doesn't really matter now.

Should have postponed the season start to Sept. 26, like the other conferences. The MWC and Pac 12 blew it big time.

If the AAC can play so could the MWC. Should have been bold but that’s not who the MWC is. A lot of it falls under the category of "could they deliver on their promises", but I believe they should have delayed until a late September start date to begin with (26th), and then see how things played out after that. If they believed their members could adhere to the general conference safety guidelines by the end of August, then it would have worked. What we don't know is if some places couldn't have the correct protocols in place by then, but we do know SDSU could. Starting on the 26th would have made the 1st practices start this past Friday, or thereabouts. About 29 days before their 1st game. They can use a football now for practices, but still some restrictions but nothing that would keep you from doing certain elements of practice. Even if push came to shove, and they determined games shouldn't start until 2 weeks later, they still could have done an 8-game conference only schedule with 1-2 open dates & a mid-Dec conference championship game. Worst case, they punt to spring in mid to late September if things aren't opening up. It's all water under the bridge, but I do think their 1st mistake was following the lead of the B1G & P12 and assuming everyone else would follow suit. They should have been working with the AAC instead & aligned their interests with them. It's disappointing, but things were moving at a mile a minute with things changing weekly. So not going to prosecute them for it.

Key points made in above comments:
1. California members wouldn't have been able to ramp up practice until now, leaving the league in the lurch.
2. You can't expect smart or creative thinking from the league office or school presidents.
However, note these lines from the MW press release on postponing fall competition: "The Mountain West will begin to explore the feasibility of rescheduling fall sports competition, including the possibility of those sports competing in the spring, and develop options for consideration." Later, Hair says return to athletics at the earliest opportunity.
The Big Ten is contemplating an Oct 10 start, reportedly. If they do, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Pac-12 follow. No reason why the MW can't shuffle the deck and start in mid-October. Doesn't mean they will, but there's little to prevent this unless the students spread COVID over all their campuses, which is a reasonably strong possibility.

I don't think there's any chance of the B1G returning to play by 10/10. They're a long shot to return by 11/21. Had the MWC pushed until late September or early Oct the Cali schools wouldn't necessarily have left them in the lurch. They'd just now be starting actual practices. Plus, as a league, if the Cali schools couldn't practice this week, then you push it back a couple weeks for everyone, not just the Cali schools. Sadly, the MWC's ship has sailed. The B1G is a long shot, the P12 definitely will not be moving up their games, which most likely means the MWC can't (or won't) as well.

1) Yes, absolutely... Let's up the death toll even higher in the name of you being entertained.
2) If you haven't been masked up and socially distant for the past 6 months, you've got no one to blame but yourself. In fact, I'm pissed at you on behalf of all the people who like college football, hoped it would be played safely this fall, AND did the things necessary to make that happen. Those who didn't... You are the reason you get to watch Central Arkansas State play a pretend season, and nothing much else.

Meanwhile, Sweden never locked down and the kids are back in school, yet it has the same deaths-per-million as the US. In San Diego (with 3.3M people) there have been zero Covid deaths under age 20, and only eight deaths under age 40. Covid19 is endemic. It targets the old and weak, and especially the old with multiple co-morbidities, i.e., those people should think about isolating themselves. Or maybe not. If you're 88 years old and you choose to risk the Rona before you die, then go for it! The average life span is 78 years old. More than half of all deaths from...ahem...or with Covid is higher than age 75.

FYI - Sweden's death toll 9X and 11X per million higher than their neighbors Finland and Norway. Different part of the world with a different environment.
That being said, I can't wait for this to be over and we can return to watching our Aztecs.

Whether you use Sweden as example or not, the fact remains the majority of all deaths are over the age of 75 with comorbidities. Old people die. It's what they do.

That would solve everything. And if that's not possible, let's just get on with it and start euthanizing everyone over 60 and/or with underlying conditions, e.g., obesity, diabetes, smokers, pot smokers, drug dabblers, drinkers, heart conditions, etc., ad nauseam. Of course, that would leave this board with only a half dozen people, but, hey, at least we would have football.

I guess the people in the states with Big 12, ACC, AAC and SEC football are ok with watching their death toll skyrocket. Also I think they are playing High School football in 26 States. Combine that with the NFL playing there should be a massive spike in deaths coming. By the end of October we will know if it was safe to play football. We will have enough data by then.

But then, I am one of those people who thought we'd have a pretty clear picture by the end of July. And yet, from where I sit, the waters are still murky. Never seen such a rash of propaganda, and for the life of me, still can't decide which side is most propagandist. I follow this closely, read the original science, when I can, have a friend at the CDC . . .and STILL can't come to a confident conclusion on just how threatening the virus TRULY is, nor what to expect moving forward. It's crazy!

Is it true that Air Force is playing games against Army and Navy? They mentioned it on ESPN last night and said they were given a waiver of some sort. Doesn't make any sense to play just two games.

Better than playing zero games. Ask any player on Air Force’s roster and they would say the same thing.

Are you saying that football is going to lead to a massive spike in deaths? How are they correlated? The players are probably as safe if not safer than anyone else in those areas.

To say that Sweden is on par with our COVID results doesn't speak well of Sweden.
